Combustion of surgical drapes during surgery is a rare event which can nonetheless lead to serious consequences. Iatrogenic burns caused by this complication are often deep and lead to functional and aesthetic sequelae. Nevertheless, awareness of the triggering factors and mechanisms, as well as knowledge of the proper use of various at-risk products such as alcohol-based antiseptic agents and compressed oxygen can reduce the incidence of these undesirable events.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 2,515 patients were examined, primarily with lung and renal cancer, revealing a one-year survival rate of 84.3% and low mortality and morbidity rates post-surgery.
  • * Findings indicate that while adrenalectomy is increasingly performed minimally invasively, factors like extra-adrenal metastases and incomplete surgery are linked to poorer survival outcomes, highlighting a need for future research on patient selection for this procedure.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system characterized by a broad and unpredictable range of symptoms, including cognitive and sociocognitive dysfunction. Among these social-cognitive functions, moral judgment has been explored in persons with MS (PwMS) using moral dilemmas, where participants must decide whether to sacrifice one person to save a greater number. Opting for such a sacrifice reflects utilitarian reasoning (sacrificing one for the benefit of many is deemed acceptable), while refusing reflects deontological reasoning (such sacrifice is considered morally wrong).

Cognitive impairment is one of the invisible symptoms of Multiple sclerosis (MS), which could be associated with depression, unemployment, reduced social interaction, inability to drive, and compromised quality of life. Moreover, the presence of cognitive impairment can be considered as a long-term prognostic factor and in the follow-up of disability. So, cognitive assessment is a crucial element in clinical follow-up of patients with MS (pwMS).

Background: Multiple sclerosis can cause locomotor and cognitive impairments even at lower levels of disability, which can impact daily life. The cognitive-motor dual task is commonly used to assess everyday locomotion. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effect of cognitive-motor dual tasks on gait parameters among patients with multiple sclerosis in the early disease stages and to determine whether dual tasks could be used as a clinical test to detect locomotion impairments.

The ISO 3382-3 (2022) standard defines single number quantities (SNQs) characterizing the spatial decay of speech (D2S, LpAS4m, rC) and of its intelligibility (rD). The standard assesses the accuracy of the measurement using a unique uncertainty value for each SNQ, relying on a round-robin test performed in a single office. To make this assessment more accurate, analytical expressions have been established by applying the law of propagation of uncertainty.

During the past 30 years, there has been a growing belief in and promotion of agroecosystem diversity for pest management and future food production as an agroecological or nature-based approach. Monoculture agriculture, which produces most of our food, is considered to be highly vulnerable to pests in contrast to plant species-diverse agroecosystems which may possess a greater abundance of natural enemies, keeping pest populations under control. In this paper, we question the role of crop diversity for pest management and explore the relationship between crop and associated diversity and pests through the following processes: environmental stresses that favor monodominance; evolutionary adaptations that resist insect herbivores (genetic resistance response); mechanisms of spatial escape from insect herbivores (escape response); and the role of crop-associated biodiversity.

Different signaling mechanisms concur to ensure robust tissue patterning and cell fate instruction during animal development. Most of these mechanisms rely on signaling proteins that are produced, transported, and detected. The spatiotemporal dynamics of signaling molecules are largely unknown, yet they determine signal activity's spatial range and time frame.

Background: Addition of oxaliplatin-based hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to cytoreductive surgery (CRS) in the treatment of peritoneal metastases of colorectal origin (CRPM) did not show any survival benefit in the PRODIGE 7 trial (P7). This study aimed to investigate whether perioperative outcomes after CRS alone for CRPM patients is mediated by hospital volume and to determine the effect of P7 on French practice for CRPM patients treated respectively with CRS alone and CRS/HIPEC.

Methods: Data from CRPM patients treated with CRS alone between 2013 and 2020 in France were collected through a national medical database.

Cell-cell apical junctions of epithelia consist of multiprotein complexes that organize as belts regulating cell-cell adhesion, permeability, and mechanical tension: the tight junction (), the (), and the . The prevailing dogma is that at the , E-cadherin and catenins are lined with F-actin bundles that support and transmit mechanical tension between cells. Using super-resolution microscopy on human intestinal biopsies and Caco-2 cells, we show that two distinct multiprotein belts are basal of the tight junctions as the intestinal epithelia mature.

In this paper, the authors introduce the Triadic Model of Pediatric Care, an innovative conceptual framework for pediatric practice with transgender and gender diverse children. The Triadic Model of Pediatric Care consists of three experts-pediatricians, primary caregiver(s), and children-who each possess unique insights, knowledge, and decision-making power. This model guides pediatricians to provide gender-affirming care that acknowledges children as experts of their own experience and worthy of bodily autonomy, while also working to ensure primary caregiver(s) have the information and support necessary to provide a safe and nurturing developmental environment for their child.

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system characterised by a broad and unpredictable range of symptoms, including cognitive and socio-cognitive dysfunction. Alongside the well-known deficits in information processing speed (IPS), executive functioning and episodic memory, recent evidence also highlighted socio-cognitive impairments in MS, such as emotion-recognition deficits. Recently, several studies investigated the association between emotion-recognition and cognitive impairment to assess whether social cognition is parallel to (or even dependent on) general cognitive dysfunction.

Gastruloids acquire their organization and shape through cell biochemical and mechanical activities. Such activities determine the physical forces and changes in material properties that transform simple spherical aggregates into organized tissues. In this Perspective, we discuss why the concepts and approaches of mechanobiology, a discipline that focuses on cell and tissue mechanics and its contribution to the organization and functions of living systems, are essential to the gastruloid field and, in turn, what gastruloids may teach us about mechanobiology.
