Background: Moderate doses of glucocorticoids result in improvements in nearly all patients with polymyalgia rheumatica, but related adverse events are common in older individuals. We aimed to evaluate whether treatment with baricitinib (a Janus kinase 1/2 inhibitor) results in disease control without the use of oral glucocorticoids in people with recent-onset polymyalgia rheumatica.

Methods: We conducted a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial at six expert centres in France.

Phosphorus-independent role of FGF23 in erythropoiesis and iron homeostasis.

A number of studies have reported an association between phosphorus, red blood cell (RBC) production, and iron metabolism. However, it is difficult to distinguish whether the effect of phosphorus is direct or through the actions of FGF23, and it is not clear whether phosphorus is positively or negatively associated with RBC production. In the present study, we investigated the effects of a) increased phosphorus load and b) phosphorus deficiency on erythropoiesis and iron metabolism in association with FGF23.

Enoxaparin versus Placebo to Prevent Symptomatic Venous Thromboembolism in Hospitalized Older Adult Medical Patients.

BACKGROUND: Admission to the hospital is a major risk factor for the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Whether thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin prevents symptomatic VTE in medically ill, hospitalized older adults remains debated. METHODS: In a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter trial, older adults (>70 years of age) hospitalized for acute medical conditions were randomly assigned to receive 40 mg a day of low-molecular-weight heparin (enoxaparin) or placebo for 6 to 14 days.

Abatacept in early polymyalgia rheumatica (ALORS): a proof-of-concept, randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial.

This article explores the ways in which having a rare skin disease (pemphigus) can reveal and redefine individuals' interpersonal relationships and how they experience and use the support of loved ones. It examines two aspects of "care": emotional support and practical support (through the division of household labor). It takes a relational ontological approach that is especially attentive to the biographical repercussions of care, and its gendered dimensions in particular.

Abaloparatide Has the Same Catabolic Effects on Bones of Mice When Infused as PTH (1-34).

Abaloparatide is a peptide analog of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP 1-34) and was approved in 2017 as the second osteoanabolic peptide for treating osteoporosis. In this article, we analyze the emotion work of women suffering from pemphigus, a rare skin disease. We suggest that this approach sheds new light on the upheavals caused by illness and more generally on the experience of illness itself. Our study draws on a series of 27 interviews with pemphigus patients whose average age was 57.

Long term simulations of potential oil spills around Cuba.

Simulations over eight years of continuous surface oil spills around Cuba are carried out to identify the most likely stranding (beaching) locations. The open source Lagrangian oil drift model OpenOil is applied with high resolution hydrodynamic forcing.
