Contrast sensitivity was measured on 20 participants, of whom 10 were age 20 to 29 years and 10 were age 60 to 69 years, through a stock automobile window (control) and two windows darkened with plastic film. For the younger drivers, a car window with 37% transmittance did not significantly reduce contrast sensitivity, but a darker tint of 18% transmittance reduced contrast sensitivity at higher spatial frequencies.

Bacterial type III secretion system drives the translocation of virulence factors into the cystosol of host target cells. In phagocytes and in Epstein-Barr virus immortalized B lymphocytes, NADPH oxidase generates O(-2) through an electron transfer chain the activity of which depends on the assembly of three, p67(phox), p47(phox) and p40(phox) cytosolic activating factors with Rac 1/2 and a membrane redox component, cytochrome b(558). In p67(phox) deficient chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) patients, p67-phox is missing and NADPH oxidase activity is abolished.

Objective: To define the therapeutic approach to ureteric stones.
Material And Methods: 137 patients with 152 ureteric stones were treated between January 1990 and January 1997. Sixty seven stones (44%) were situated in the lumbar ureter, 16 stones (10%) were in the iliac ureter, 69 stones (46%) were in the pelvic ureter.
Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are widely employed to produce glycosylated recombinant proteins. Our group as well as others have demonstrated that the sialylation defect of CHO cells can be corrected by transfecting the alpha2,6-sialyltransferase (alpha2,6-ST) cDNA. Glycoproteins produced by such CHO cells display both alpha2,6- and alpha2,3-linked terminal sialic acid residues, similar to human glycoproteins.

When the subject actively tapped or pressed the compliant objects, they discriminated softness as well by means of a stylus as they did by contacting the objects directly with the fingerpad. Discrimination with the stylus was unaffected by whether the stylus was controlled by one or two fingers.

Preoperative and postoperative urinary continence, the time until urinary continence was achieved, the presence of urgent micturition, the degree of discomfort caused by urinary incontinence and associated voiding disorders were assessed.
We investigated the effects of tactile allodynia on the itch and mechanically evoked dysesthesiae produced by an intradermal injection of histamine in human volunteers. After an intradermal injection of capsaicin into the volar surface of one forearm, there developed an area of tactile allodynia to stroking and hyperalgesia to pricking the skin. Histamine was then injected simultaneously into the area of allodynia (experimental arm) and into the opposite forearm (control arm).

Sodium currents that are resistant to tetrodotoxin (TTX-R) and the transcripts of two TTX-R sodium channels are significantly attenuated, while a rapidly repriming tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S) current emerges and the transcripts of alpha-III sodium channel, which produce a TTX-S current when expressed in oocytes, are up-regulated. We report here on changes in sodium currents and sodium channel transcripts in DRG neurons in the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of neuropathic pain.

Both the kinetics of the initiation of antiviral activity after addition of the PIs to these cultures and the kinetics of restoration of virion infectivity after removal of the PIs from the treated cultures were examined. We found that the kinetics of initiation of particle infectivity inhibition produced by a high extracellular concentration (5 microM) of the inhibitors were similar for all five inhibitors tested: loss of particle infectivity was perceptible as early as 1 h after the initiation of PI treatment and increased gradually thereafter.

Inability to consistently rear healthy Trichoplusia ni led to a study of its rearing diseases. Four diseases were designated after preliminary research which included electron microscopy: cytoplasmic polyhedrosis (due to cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus, or CPV), nuclear polyhedrosis (due to nucleopolyhedrovirus, or NPV), "neonate death" syndrome (mortality in first or second instars), and "late-instar" syndrome (death in late instars accompanied by bacterial decomposition). Infectious agents were not detected by electron microscopy in insects with the latter two diseases.

Subjects And Methods: Subjects were 485 participants in the Sorbinil Retinopathy Trial, a randomized trial of aldose reductase inhibition among patients aged 18 to 56 years with type 1 diabetes mellitus (duration of 1 to 15 years) and no or only mild retinopathy. Retinopathy progression, assessed by seven-field stereoscopic fundus photography, was defined as worsening by two or more levels on a standardized grading scale at the end of follow-up (median, 41 months).

The role of glutamate is dependent on the distribution and regulation of glutamate receptors in the spinal cord. Ten days after pronase-induced deafferentation there was a significant increase in SP and CGRP binding in the superficial (I-II) and deeper (II-IV) laminae of the dorsal horn ipsilaterally. Densitometric measurements revealed a 50% return towards normal values for SP binding by 90 days postpronase injection in all laminae examined, while the density of CGRP binding showed a partial return towards normal values for laminae III-IV only.
