Methods: The target population comprised persons 65 years and older permanently residing in Germany and with sufficient German language skills. Proxy interviews were possible and consent from legal representatives was obtained as necessary in order to enable participation of physically or cognitively impaired persons.
Background: Data on seroconversion rates after SARS-CoV-2 infection in young children (<6 years) is scarce. The present study compares seroconversion rates between young children and adults and identifies associated factors.
Methods: The COALA study ("Corona-outbreak-related examinations in daycare centers") investigated transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in daycare centers and associated households (10/2020-06/2021).
Plasmodesmata (PD) facilitate movement of molecules between plant cells. Regulation of this movement is still not understood. Plasmodesmata are hard to study, being deeply embedded within cell walls and incorporating several membrane types.

Methods: Prospective cohort study of infected daycare children and staff and their close contacts in households from 11/2020 to 06/2021. Adult participants took upper respiratory tract specimen from themselves and/or their children, for PCR tests on SARS-CoV-2.

Background: The symptoms of SARS-CoV‑2 infections in children are mostly mild; however, the symptoms are highly variable. There are only a few studies on non-hospitalized children. The clinical picture described in hospitalized children cannot be transferred to non-hospitalized children and the frequency of certain symptoms in children may thus be overestimated.

The majority of children <6 years attend daycare programmes in Germany, but the role of daycare centres in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is unclear. We investigated the transmission risk in daycare centres and the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to associated households.

The primary aim of this study is to investigate the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in child day care centers and connected households as well as transmission-related indicators and clinical symptoms among children and adults. COALA ("Corona outbreak-related examinations in day care centers") is a day care center- and household-based study with a case-ascertained study design.

Infections are likely to be under-recorded in the notification data from local health authorities on laboratory-confirmed cases since SARS-CoV-2 infections can proceed with few symptoms and then often remain undetected. Seroepidemiological studies allow the estimation of the proportion in the population that has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 (seroprevalence) as well as the extent of undetected infections.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAt a regional and local level, the COVID-19 pandemic has not spread out uniformly and some German municipalities have been particularly affected. The seroepidemiological data from these areas helps estimate the proportion of the population that has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 (seroprevalence), as well as the number of undetected infections and asymptomatic cases. In four municipalities which were especially affected, 2,000 participants will be tested for an active SARS-CoV-2 infection (oropharyngeal swab) or a past infection (blood specimen IgG antibody test).

This study describes methods for fabricating, culturing, and characterizing modular microbeads containing progenitor cells that can be used to create osteochondral tissue constructs. Such biphasic engineered tissues were cultured in a low flow rate perfusion bioreactor chamber to maintain tissue-specific differentiation while allowing development of the osteochondral interface.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed the modulation transfer function (MTF), the noise power spectrum (NPS) and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of two detector technologies, suitable for breast CT (BCT): a flat-panel energy-integrating detector with a 70 μm and a 208 μm thick gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS) and a 150 μm thick cesium iodide (CsI) scintillator and a photon-counting detector with a 1000 μm thick CdTe sensor.
Results: The measurements for GOS scintillator thicknesses of 70 μm and 208 μm delivered 10% pre-sampled MTF values of 6.
Between 1960 and 1983, 82 children were treated for Wilm's tumour at our hospital. The secondary effects and changes in the skeleton have been assessed. Radiotherapy was found to cause growth disturbances and osteochondrosis of variable degree, but not osteonecrosis.

A retrospective evaluation was made on the results of primary or postoperative radiotherapy in 162 patients with grade I to IV astrocytomas. The greatest part of the overall group was built by 113 patients suffering from glioblastoma multiforme. For the survival analysis, the prognostic importance of the following factors was investigated: sex, age, surgery, radicality of surgery, grading according to Kernohan, tumorous lesions in central structures, and target volume of radiotherapy.

All patients displayed varying degrees of impaired fixation of 123I-IMP in the whole brain. These findings were not related to the clinical variants of ALS and the age of the patients.

The treatment consisted of a contralateral irradiation up to a dose of 40 Gy and a small-volume boost up to 60 to 66 Gy. In case of progressive remote metastases, the treatment was finished at 50 Gy.

The irradiation was performed after surgery in 58 patients, 37 out of them had tumor reresidues at the beginning of radiotherapy. The local recurrence rate was 16%, and there were no differences between patients operated in sano and patients operated non in sano.

A scintigraphic method is presented which allows to transfer the site and borderlines of the organs to the body surface taking exactly into account the irradiation position. A precise transfer of site, size, and shape of the organs facilitates the adjustment of irradiation fields or the positioning of satellite field stops.

Three-dimensional dose distributions for the radiation therapy of sinus maxillary tumours have been calculated. Irradiation techniques with 8 MV X-rays and 15 MV X-rays from a linear accelerator (Siemens Mevatron 74 and Siemens Mevatron 77) and 60Co gamma-irradiation (Siemens Gammatron S80) are compared to each other. Using an anterior and a lateral field, the three-dimensional dose distribution of high energy photons shows that the radiation burden of the lens and the skin is significantly lower than with the use of 60Co irradiation.

For elderly cancer patients radiology is of importance in diagnosis and predominantly in therapy. Non invasive diagnostic procedures, the basis for an optimal organ-saving plan of radiotherapy, are well tolerated by these patients. Prognosis, especially indication of curative or palliative radiotherapy, depend more on the general condition of health than the patient's age.

This applies in particular to Hodgkin's disease, whereas chemotherapy is more important in other types of lymphomas. In all cases, treatment is carried out in strict accordance with the stage of the disease, taking into consideration the occult paths of spread; in the lymphomas not associated with Hodgkin's disease, their histological type was also taken into account (Kiel classification).
