Recognition of individual pigs is critical to the monitoring of pig body size and physiological health status in large-scale pig farms. In this study, deep learning methods were introduced in the intelligent recognition and segmentation of individual replacement pigs, which can realize the non-contact surveillance of each pig. Swin Transformer was used for the recognition and segmentation of individual pigs based on the surveillance data, and different models were compared to find the model with the fastest training speed and most accurate results.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) shows significant variability, with different phenotypes reflecting unique brain network changes that could improve diagnosis.
  • Researchers used a method called nonnegative matrix factorization to identify 4 distinct subtypes of AD from a large dataset, revealing important differences in brain connectivity and cognitive function for each subtype.
  • These findings enhance our understanding of AD's complexity and could inform more personalized treatment approaches and future research efforts.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative uses an outbreak response protocol that defines type 2 Sabin or Sabin-like virus as those with 0-5 nucleotides diverging from their parental strain in the complete VP1 genomic region. Sabin or Sabin-like viruses share highly similar genome sequences, regardless of their origin. Thus, it is challenging to distinguish viruses at a higher resolution to detect polio clusters or trace sources for local transmissions of viruses at an early stage.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an intractable and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that can lead to severe cognitive decline, impaired speech, short-term memory loss, and finally an inability to function in daily life. For patients, their families, and even all of society, AD can impart great emotional pressure and economic costs. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate potential diagnostic biomarkers of AD.

  • The study aims to create a preference-based measure (PBM) specifically for East and Southeast Asian countries, as most existing PBMs are based on Western perspectives.
  • Conducted through interviews with 225 adults across 9 countries, qualitative analysis was used to identify relevant health dimensions.
  • The resulting Asia PBM 7 dimensions instrument includes 7 key items (pain, mental health, energy, mobility, work/school, interpersonal interactions, and burden to others) that represent health-related quality of life in these regions.

Pathological myocardial remodeling was still one of the leading causes of death worldwide with an unmet therapeutic need. A growing number of researchers have addressed the role of epigenome changes in cardiovascular diseases, paving the way for the clinical application of novel cardiovascular-related epigenetic targets in the future. In this review, we summarized the emerged advances of epigenetic regulation, including DNA methylation, Histone posttranslational modification, Adenosine disodium triphosphate (ATP)-dependent chromatin remodeling, Non-coding RNA, and RNA modification, in pathological myocardial remodeling.

The ensemble transfer entropy (TEensemble) refers to the transfer entropy estimated from an ensemble of realizations. Due to its time-resolved analysis, it is adapted to analyze the dynamic interaction between brain regions. However, in the traditional TEensemble, multiple sets of surrogate data should be used to construct the null hypothesis distribution, which dramatically increases the computational complexity.

Objective: To explore the effect and mechanism of the miR-339-3p/KAT6A/TRIM24 axis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell growth and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) progression.

Methods: CNE2 and 5-8F NPC cell lines were transfected with miR-339-3p-mimic or sh-KAT6A alone or co-transfected with miR-339-3p-mimic and oe-KAT6A. The expression levels of miR-339-3p, KAT6A, TRIM24, and EMT-related proteins were assessed, in addition to cell biological behaviors.

In humans, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have safely delivered therapeutic RNA to hepatocytes after systemic administration and to antigen-presenting cells after intramuscular injection. However, systemic RNA delivery to non-hepatocytes remains challenging, especially without targeting ligands such as antibodies, peptides, or aptamers. Here we report that piperazine-containing ionizable lipids (Pi-Lipids) preferentially deliver mRNA to immune cells in vivo without targeting ligands.

Background: Analyses in silico suggested the upregulation of a circular RNA (circRNA), circ_0008287, in gastric cancer and possible interactions among microRNA (miR)-548c-3p, circ_0008287, and intracellular chloride channel protein 1 (CLIC1). This study aims to testify whether circ_0008287 can affect the immune escape of gastric cancer cells by regulating miR-548c-3p and CLIC1.

Methods: RT-qPCR was performed to determine the expression pattern of circ_0008287 in gastric cancer cells.

An efficient potassium persulfate-mediated radical addition of allenamides with diselenides was developed to create a workable route to 1,2-diselenide products. The reaction tolerates a wide spectrum of functional groups to deliver the products in good to excellent yields. Mechanistic investigations including a calculation study indicated that the radical cascade proceeds through a vinyl radical intermediate, which is formed a selenium radical added to the terminal CC double bond of allenamides.

Article Synopsis
  • The ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has led to new variants that heighten the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, classified as variants of concern or interest (VOC/VOI) due to their impact on vaccine effectiveness.
  • A study analyzing 14 different variants found varying levels of resistance to neutralization by antibodies from vaccinated individuals, with the Omicron variant being the most adept at evading these defenses.
  • Despite Omicron's escape ability, individuals who received a booster vaccination still showed moderate effectiveness in neutralizing this variant, reinforcing the importance of vaccination in combating COVID-19.

α-Synuclein (α-syn), as a primary pathogenic protein in Parkinson's disease (PD) and other synucleinopathies, exhibits a high potential to form polymorphic fibrils. Chemical ligands have been found to involve in the assembly of α-syn fibrils in patients' brains. However, how ligands influence the fibril polymorphism remains vague.

Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) plays an important role in microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), which has great potential in broad applications such as building restoration, CO sequestration, and bioremediation of heavy metals, etc. However, our understanding of ACC is still limited. By combining microscopy of cell-laden microdroplets with confocal Raman microspectroscopy, we investigated the ACC dynamics during MICP.

Background And Objectives: Existing generic preference-based measures were all developed in Western countries. Evidence shows that the Chinese population may have different perceptions about health and health-related quality of life. This study aimed at developing a descriptive system of a new generic preference-based measure under the initiative of China Health Related Outcomes Measures (CHROME).

Background: The dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) has been used successfully to investigate the dysfunction of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. The reconfiguration intensity of nodal dFC, which means the degree of alteration between FCs at different time scales, could provide additional information for understanding the reconfiguration of brain connectivity.

Results: In this paper, we introduced a feature named time distance nodal connectivity diversity (tdNCD), and then evaluated the network reconfiguration intensity in every specific brain region in AD using a large multicenter dataset (N = 809 from 7 independent sites).
