Introduction: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) can severely affect the urinary tract, leading to strictures and urine outflow obstruction, which pose significant risks to kidney function. Procedures involving the urinary mucosa often exacerbate these issues, making safe bladder emptying a major challenge. This study reviews surgical methods for managing urological complications in EB patients, with a focus on the Macedo procedure, which offers a promising alternative that avoids further bladder mucosa irritation and prevents disease exacerbation.

Unprecedented warm ocean conditions, driven by the Large Marine Heatwave (LMH) and the 2015-16 El Niño in the Northeast Pacific favored pervasive toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms that caused widespread ecological impacts, but little is known about the magnitude to which marine food webs were altered. Here, we assessed the trophic transfer of domoic acid (DA; a neurotoxin) and changes in trophic position from multiple key species during the peak of the LMH and El Niño in 2015 in comparison with 2018, a reference non-anomalous warm year.

In 2015, the largest recorded harmful algal bloom (HAB) occurred in the Northeast Pacific, causing nearly 100 million dollars in damages to fisheries and killing many protected marine mammals. Dominated by the toxic diatom , this bloom produced high levels of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). Through molecular and transcriptional characterization of 52 near-weekly phytoplankton net-tow samples collected at a bloom hotspot in Monterey Bay, California, we identified active transcription of known DA biosynthesis () genes from the three identified toxigenic species, including as the primary origin of toxicity.

The landing patterns of blood-sucking females (Diptera: Tabanidae) are largely influenced by their visual perceptions. When attacking humans, the shape of different body parts and overall brightness of the body could be the factors determining the place of blood-sucking. The visual attractiveness of the human body for tabanids was investigated through a black and a white mannequin in the Danube floodplain, Slovakia.

Harmful cyanobacteria blooms are a growing threat in estuarine waters as upstream blooms are exported into coastal environments. Cyanobacteria can produce potent toxins, one of which-hepatotoxic microcystins (MCs)-can persist and accumulate within the food web. Filter-feeding invertebrates may biomagnify toxins up to 100× ambient concentrations.

Ocean spring phytoplankton blooms are dynamic periods important to global primary production. We document vertical patterns of a diverse suite of eukaryotic algae, the prasinophytes, in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre with monthly sampling over four years at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study site. Water column structure was used to delineate seasonal stability periods more ecologically relevant than seasons defined by calendar dates.

Domoic acid produced by toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia species is the main toxin threat from harmful algal blooms in Monterey Bay and the larger California Current region on the West Coast of the United States. Toxin monitoring in Monterey Bay includes a long-running time series of weekly measurements of domoic acid from water samples, sentinel mussels, and solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT) at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf (SCW). The SCW sampling site is unusual because of its position in the Monterey Bay upwelling shadow in the north bay.
