In this paper, we theoretically analyze the optimization of a Fabry-Pérot cavity for the purpose of detecting partially absorbing objects placed inside without photon exchange. Utilizing the input-output formalism, we quantitatively relate the probability of correctly inferring the presence or absence of the object to the probability of avoiding absorption. We show that, if the cavity decay rate due to absorption by the object is comparable to that of the empty cavity and to the object-induced detuning, the product of the two probabilities is maximized by an undercoupled cavity, in which case detection in transmission is favorable to that in reflection.

The study aimed to develop a superhydrophobic coating on the aluminium alloy 2024-T3 surface. The desired surface roughness and low surface energy were achieved with SiO nanoparticles, synthesised via the Stöber method and modified with alkyl silane (AS) or perfluoroalkyl silane (FAS). The experimental methods employed during metagenomic sequencing analyses of microbiome samples significantly impact the resulting data and typically vary substantially between laboratories. In this study, a full factorial experimental design was used to compare the effects of a select set of methodological choices (sample, operator, lot, extraction kit, variable region, and reference database) on the analysis of biologically diverse stool samples. For each parameter investigated, a main effect was calculated that allowed direct comparison both between methodological choices (bias effects) and between samples (real biological differences).

Disulfide-containing nitrosoarenes with [bis(4-nitrosobenzyl) disulfide, ()] or without [4-nitrosophenyl disulfide, (), and 1,2-bis(4'-nitroso-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)disulfane, ()] an alkyl spacer between the sulfur headgroup and the aromatic moiety (phenyl in () or biphenyl in ()) were synthesized and used as precursors to form azodioxy thiolate films on Au(111) substrates. Due to the incorporated disulfide functionalities, these specifically designed nitrosoarenes are enabled to self-polymerize through azodioxy bonds on a gold surface. We report the successful assembly of a tripeptide in the presence of nanodiamonds (NDs) into nanocomposite hydrogels. While the presence of NDs does not hinder peptide self-assembly and gelation kinetics are not affected, NDs improve the viscoelastic properties and significantly increase the elastic moduli of the peptide hydrogels. Increased resistance of the gels against applied stress can also be attained depending on the amount of NDs loaded in the nanocomposite.

Water kefir is a product obtained through the fermentation of sucrose solution, usually with some kind of dried fruit addition, by a combined culture of micro-organisms which are contained within kefir grains. Hot-melt extrusion (HME) is a widely used method for creating amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) of poorly soluble drug substances, where the drug is molecularly dispersed in a solid polymer matrix. This study examines the impact of three different copovidone excipients, their reactive impurity levels, HME barrel temperature, and the distribution of colloidal silicon dioxide (SiO) on impurity levels, stability, and drug release of ASDs and their tablets. Initial peroxide levels were higher in Kollidon VA 64 (KVA64) and Plasdone S630 (PS630) compared to Plasdone S630 Ultra (PS630U), leading to greater oxidative degradation of the drug in fresh ASD tablets.

The aim of this work is to define harmonized reference conditions and assessment thresholds for selected criteria elements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Descriptor 5 (Eutrophication) in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and to test if a tool for integrated assessment of the status of marine systems can be used as a common methodological approach. In this frame, we tested two statistical approaches in order to set threshold values for four criteria of Descriptor 5: nutrients, chlorophyll a, transparency and dissolved oxygen in the bottom waters. The World Health Organization recommends adjusting salt intake as a part of the nine global targets to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable chronic diseases as a priority and the most cost-effective intervention. In 2006, the main aim of the Croatian Action on Salt and Health was to decrease salt intake by 16% because of its critical intake and consequences on human health. We have organized educative activities to increase awareness on salt harmfulness, define food categories of prime interest, collaborate with industries and determine salt intake (24 h urine sodium excretion).
