Hydrogels are reported to have various biomedical field applications, and many reports also suggest that soft gels promote stem cell differentiation. Chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) is significant in articular cartilage repair. This study focuses on polysaccharide-based hydrogels which enhance chondrocyte lineage differentiation of MSC when grown in the hydrogels.

MicroR159 (miR159) regulation of expression is highly conserved in terrestrial plants; however, its functional role remains poorly understood. In Arabidopsis (), although genes are constitutively transcribed during vegetative growth, their effects are suppressed by strong and constitutive silencing by miR159. GAMYB expression occurs only if miR159 function is inhibited, which results in detrimental pleiotropic defects, questioning the purpose of the miR159- pathway.

The use of ivermectin in lymphatic filariasis (both bancroftian and brugian) has been recently explored in several studies. We report in this paper, for the first time, a direct comparison of the efficacy and tolerability of single doses of ivermectin and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) in brugian filariasis. We also present our findings on the use of split doses of ivermectin and DEC on microfilaraemia levels and the occurrence of adverse reactions.

Ivermectin, a new antifilarial drug and currently the drug of choice for the treatment of onchocerciasis, has been shown to be effective in bancroftian filariasis. We report here, for the first time, the efficacy and safety of the drug in the treatment of filariasis caused by periodic Brugia malayi. Sixty male, asymptomatic microfilaraemics of Alleppey district, Kerala, South India, received single oral doses of ivermectin in a double blind study.

The complete nucleotide sequence of the 4746bp HindIII fragment encoding the genes for the biosynthesis and assembly of CS3 pili has been determined. By site-directed mutagenesis in conjunction with analysis of the plasmid-encoded proteins in minicells, the actual reading frames for the various products have been determined. This demonstrated that the genes for four of the proteins (63 kD, 48 kD, 33 kD, and 20 kD in size) are encoded entirely within the same open reading frame as a fifth protein (104 kD).

The complete nucleotide sequence has been determined of a 3635-bp region, extending from the HpaI site in traT, at F coordinate 90.3 kb, to beyond the end of traD, of the F sex factor plasmid of Escherichia coli K-12. This region contains the C-terminal coding part of traT and the entire traD gene.

The DNA encoding the surface exclusion genes traS and traT of the F sex factor of Escherichia coli K-12 has been sequenced and the biological activity of the various terminators and promoters determined. The data show that traS encodes a 16,861 Mr protein with no apparent signal sequence, as expected for its cytoplasmic membrane location. The protein is extremely hydrophobic.

The nucleotide sequence of the ompV gene of Vibrio cholerae was determined. The product of the gene is a 28,000 dalton protein which, after the removal of a 19 amino acid signal sequence, produces a mature outer membrane protein of 26,000 daltons. The cleavage site was determined by amino-terminal amino acid sequencing of the purified mature protein.
