Functional appliances are widely used for promoting mandibular growth by utilizing a construction bite position. We aimed to measure the mechanical load generated by movement of functional appliances and determine the factors influencing this load. Thirteen patients aged 8-12 years were selected for the study, and the load was measured using a previously developed measurement device.

In this study, the effects of tibial bone cutting on the attachment area of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), including both the anterolateral bundle (ALB) and posteromedial bundle (PMB), in cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (CR-TKA) were simulated using a three-dimensional (3D) model of the tibial reconstruction. A total of 40 knees with medial osteoarthritis in patients scheduled for TKA were evaluated. Following surface registration of 3D computed tomography (CT) and 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) models of the tibia with the PCL, the area of PCL attachment was calculated.

Successful driving involves steering corrections that respond to immediate positional errors while also anticipating upcoming changes to the road layout ahead. In popular steering models these tasks are often treated as separate functions using two points: the near region for correcting current errors, and the far region for anticipating future steering requirements. Whereas two-point control models can capture many aspects of driver behavior, the nature of perceptual inputs to these two "points" remains unclear.

Background: The intradermal (ID) route for vaccination represents an effective alternative to subcutaneous (SC)/intramuscular administration to induce protective immunity. However, a critical issue associated with ID vaccination is the precise delivery of solution in the upper dermis, which ensures enhanced immunity.

Methods: We fabricated a hollow microneedle unit made of poly-glycolic acid by injection molding and bonding, and created a dedicated prototype injector.

Serum iron levels have been reported to increase following the administration of various anticancer drugs. An increase in serum iron levels during therapy with leucovorin and fluorouracil plus oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) or leucovorin and fluorouracil plus irinotecan (FOLFIRI) was also observed. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between serum iron levels and prognosis in advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients treated with FOLFOX/FOLFIRI ± molecularly-targeted drugs.

An actuator is required to change its speed and force depending on the situation. Using multiple actuators for one driving axis is one of the possible solutions; however, there is an associated problem of output power matching. This study proposes a new active joint mechanism using multiple actuators.

Introduction: Effectiveness and safety of warfarin therapy for non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients are strongly associated with its stability presented such as time in therapeutic range (TTR) of PT-INR. However, the factors that affect TTR have not been fully elucidated in Japan where majority of patients are controlled within the range of 1.6-2.

The leucovorin (FOL) and fluorouracil (5-FU) plus oxaliplatin (l-OHP; FOLFOX) or FOL and 5-FU plus irinotecan (SN-38; FOLFIRI) regimens with or without molecularly-targeted drugs are widely used as first-line chemotherapy in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC). Whether FOLFOX or FOLFIRI is administered first is not significant, however, it is essential that full administration of the targeted dosages of all 3 drugs, 5-FU, l-OHP and SN-38, is achieved. However, this is not always possible and second-line chemotherapy must be abandoned in certain cases.

Many patients with hypertension have difficulty achieving their target blood pressure (BP). Therefore combination therapy, for example with an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and a diuretic, may be recommended. We previously evaluated the efficacy and safety of losartan (LOS) 50 mg - hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) 12.

Background And Objectives: Although strict blood pressure (BP) control is effective in the prevention of cardiovascular events, it is often insufficient in many hypertensive patients. B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular events. We investigated the effects of the losartan/hydrochlorothiazide combination on BP and plasma BNP in hypertensive patients uncontrolled by an angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist (angiotensin receptor blocker [ARB])-based therapy.

Adipocytes forming fat pad in vivo are surrounded by well developed basement membranes. Synthesis of basement membrane is enhanced during in vitro differentiation of preadipocyte line. In order to know the role of basement membrane in adipogenesis in vivo, we injected 3T3-F442A preadipocytes subcutaneously into nude mice together with or without the reconstituted basement membrane, Matrigel.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effects of parathyroidectomy on bone density in cortical versus cancellous bone, noting that cancellous bone shows greater changes than cortical bone.
  • After parathyroidectomy, cancellous bone displayed a quick decline in osteoclast activity to 0%, while cortical bone showed a less pronounced response.
  • Findings indicate that changes in bone formation markers occurred after histomorphometric changes, highlighting a delayed response in cortical bone compared to cancellous bone.

In recent years, the incidence of prostate carcinoma in patients with renal failure is increasing. But it is difficult to diagnose the occurrence of this neoplasm because of decrease of urinary volume in these patients. Two hemodialysis patients (age: 64, 68 years, the duration of hemodialysis: 10, 8 years) suffering from prostate carcinoma were treated with androgen deprivation therapy, which accelerates bone resorption.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how total parathyroidectomy and autotransplantation affect bone structure in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.
  • Despite low PTH levels after 12 weeks, low turnover bone disease was observed, indicating that bone resorption still outpaced formation a year post-surgery.
  • Long-term monitoring of bone mineral density is crucial due to these findings, as patients may experience significant decreases in bone density over time.

In patients with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis (HD), left ventricular (LV) function is frequently impaired. However, the mechanism of the LV dysfunction is totally unknown. It has been suggested that overproduction of nitric oxide induced by inflammatory cytokines may contribute to the LV dysfunction in some diseased states.
