The existence of neural stem cells (NSCs) in the adult mammalian nervous system, although small in number and restricted to the sub-ventricular zone of the lateral ventricles, the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the olfactory epithelium, is a gift of evolution for the adaptive brain function which requires persistent plastic changes of these regions. It is known that most adult NSCs are latent, showing long cell cycles. In the past decade, the concept of quiescent NSCs (qNSCs) has been widely accepted by researchers in the field, and great progress has been made in the biology of qNSCs.

However, current technologies limit the number of neurons that can be monitored and manipulated. A new technology has become available for intracellular recording and stimulation which we demonstrate in the tractable nervous system of Aplysia.

Multielectrode arrays for interfacing with neurons are of great interest for a wide range of medical applications. However, current electrodes cause damage over time. Ultra small carbon fibers help to address issues but controlling the electrode site geometry is difficult.

Methods: A total of 421 patients with aSAH who were diagnosed by digital subtraction angiography in The General Hospital of Northern Theater Command center from January 2020 to June 2021 were screened to establish the training cohort.
Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the causes of retinal ischemia/reperfusion injury, which results in NLRP3 inflammasome activation and leads to visual damage. Homer1a is reported to play a protective role in neuroinflammation in the cerebrum. However, the effects of Homer1a on NLRP3 inflammasomes in retinal ischemia/reperfusion injury caused by elevated IOP remain unknown.

In-situ exsolution type perovskites as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFCs) anode materials have received widespread attention because of their excellent catalytic activity. In this study, excessive NiO is introduced to the SrVFeMoO (SVFMO) perovskite with the B-site excess design, and in-situ growth of FeNi alloy nanoparticles is induced in the reducing atmosphere to form the SrVFeMoO-Ni (SVFMO-Ni) composite anode. Here, with H or CH as SOFCs fuel gas, the formation of FeNi nanoparticles further enhances the catalytic ability.

Therefore, a huge amount of discarded medical surgical masks will be produced, which will become a potential hazard to pollute the environment and endanger the health of organisms without our awareness. Herein, a green and cost-effective way for the reasonable disposal of waste masks becomes necessary.

Co-infection with other respiratory viruses was detected in four of these cases. Two ICV genomes were obtained and clustered in the S1-sublineage of C/Sao Paulo/378/82, indicating that genetically diverse ICV strains have been circulating in mainland China.

Methods: During the study, the participants were weighed and examined for body composition every morning. The total energy expenditure (TEE) of the participants was measured by the doubly labeled water method for 7 days, and during this period, basal energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry and physical activity energy expenditure was measured by an accelerometer.
Background: The analyses of neuronal circuits require high-throughput technologies for stimulating and recording many neurons simultaneously with single-neuron precision. Voltage-sensitive dyes (VSDs) have enabled the monitoring of membrane potentials of many (10-100 s) neurons simultaneously. Carbon fiber electrode (CFE) arrays allow for stimulation and recording of many neurons simultaneously, including intracellularly.

Mitochondrial dysfunction, especially in terms of mitochondrial dynamics, has been reported to be closely associated with neuronal outcomes and neurological impairment in cerebral ischemia/hypoxia injury. Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) is a cytoplasmic GTPase that mediates mitochondrial fission and participates in neuronal cell death, calcium signaling, and oxidative stress. The neuroprotective role of Drp1 inhibition has been confirmed in several central nervous system disease models, demonstrating that targeting Drp1 may shed light on novel approaches for the treatment of cerebral ischemia/hypoxia injury.

In this study, we tested if high-altitude hypoxia (HAH) causes neuronal death and mitochondrial dysfunction using various and approaches.
Methods: Acute high-altitude cerebral hypoxia was induced by hypobaric hypoxia chamber in male mice.

Highly contagious respiratory illnesses like influenza and COVID-19 pose serious risks to public health. A two-in-one vaccine would be ideal to avoid multiple vaccinations for these diseases. Here, we generated a chimeric receptor binding domain of the spike protein (S-RBD) and hemagglutinin (HA)-stalk-based vaccine for both SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses.

In the present study, we show a near-two-decadal (2002-2022) spatiotemporal distribution of global phytoplankton abundance, proxy as dominant phytoplankton taxonomic groups (PTGs), with a newly developed remote sensing model. Globally, six chief PTGs, namely chlorophytes (~26%), diatoms (~24%), haptophytes (~15%), cryptophytes (~10%), cyanobacteria (~8%), and dinoflagellates (~3%), explain most of the variation (~86%) in phytoplankton assemblages.

In this study, an AB scaffold was constructed via three-dimensional (3D) bedside-bioprinting technology and used for cranioplasty. To simulate the skull structure, a polycaprolactone shell was designed as an external lamina, and 3D-printed AB and a bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) hydrogel was used to mimic cancellous bone for bone regeneration.

NiAl-LDH and CoAl-LDH as typical two-dimensional layered materials have been widely used as supercapacitor cathodes due to their special composition, morphology and rich electrochemically active centers. Blood-based biomarkers may provide additional information to the established prognostic factors. Markers of atherosclerosis have been identified as one of the most promising biomarkers for predicting prognosis, and inflammation, in turn, affects atherosclerosis.
