Synthesis and characterisation of starch/agar nanocomposite films for food packaging application.

In the present work cassava starch/agar Ag and ZnO nanocomposite films were prepared by the solution casting method. The structural, physical and antimicrobial properties of the nanocomposite films were studied as a function of the concentration of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles. The results of the thermogravimetric analysis showed 8-15% degradation of both the nanocomposite films at 150°C endorsing the thermal stability of the films.

Background: It is crucial to assess genomic literacy related to stroke among Africans in preparation for the ethical, legal and societal implications of the genetic revolution which has begun in Africa.

Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among stroke patients and stroke-free controls recruited across 15 sites in Ghana and Nigeria.

Salt-stress-responsive chloroplast proteins in Brassica juncea genotypes with contrasting salt tolerance and their quantitative PCR analysis.

Brassica juncea is mainly cultivated in the arid and semi-arid regions of India where its production is significantly affected by soil salinity. Adequate knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the salt tolerance at sub-cellular levels must aid in developing the salt-tolerant plants. A proper functioning of chloroplasts under salinity conditions is highly desirable to maintain crop productivity.

In vitro antiparasitic activity of microbial pigments and their combination with phytosynthesized metal nanoparticles.

Bioactive pigments were extracted and purified from cultures of Serratia marcescens and Chromobacterium violaceum. Spectroscopic, FTIR, and HPLC analyses showed prodigiosin and violacein as the principle molecules in the extract. Bioactive microbial pigments prodigiosin, violacein and their combinations with phytosynthesized silver and gold nanoparticles were studied for in vitro growth inhibition of Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma brucei gambiense.

Recurrent tumefactive demyelination: An unusual presentation.

Tumefactive multiple sclerosis (MS) is a rare variant of MS characterized by the presence of large demyelinating plaques of more than 2 cm, identified with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Distinguishing tumefactive lesions from other etiologies of intracranial space occupying lesions is necessary to avoid the inadvertent intervention. We had a 14-year-old girl who presented to us with two episodes of subacute hemiparesis over a span of 6 months.

Maintenance of residual activity of Bt toxin by using natural and synthetic dyes: a novel approach for sustainable mosquito vector control.

Mosquito control protein from Bacillus thuringiensis gets inactivated with exposure to sunlight. To address this issue, the potential of synthetic and natural dye was investigated as sunlight protectants. Bt SV2 in absence of dyes when exposed to sunlight showed reduced effectiveness against the fourth instars of mosquito larvae.

Nematicidal activity of microbial pigment from Serratia marcescens.

Ineffectiveness of available nematicides and the high damage caused by plant-parasitic nematodes result in the urgent need to find some natural remedy for their control. Bioactivity of the pigment extracted from Serratia marcescens was screened for controlling nematodes at their juvenile stage. Test pigment was found effective against juvenile stages of Radopholus similis and Meloidogyne javanica at low concentrations (LC50 values, 83 and 79 μg/mL, respectively) as compared with positive control of copper sulphate (LC50 values, 380 and 280 μg/mL, respectively).

In this study, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based molecular marker was developed for authentication of Catharanthus roseus, a medicinal plant. Samples of this plant were collected from different geographical locations in India. Random amplified polymorphic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis of collected samples was carried out with 25 random primers.

A technique has been developed whereby the peak purity of a compound with poor UV detection can be determined using a gas chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometer. The drug products were subjected to hydrolysis, oxidation, photolysis, and heat to apply stress conditions.

Brain metastasis from cervical carcinoma--a case report.

Brain metastases from cervical carcinomas are extremely rare. We report a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix who developed an isolated left parietooccipital lobe metastasis within 4 months of treatment of the primary disease. The presenting symptoms of the metastatic disease were visual disturbance, headache, and vomiting.
