Continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is significant for prevention of heart disease and is becoming an important part of personal and family health care. In most of the existing wearable solutions, conventional metal sensors and corresponding chips are simply integrated into clothes and usually could only collect few leads of ECG signals that could not provide enough information for diagnosis of cardiac diseases such as arrhythmia and myocardial ischemia. In this study, a wearable 12-lead ECG acquisition system with fabric electrodes was developed and could simultaneously process 12 leads of ECG signals.

Phonation is controlled by complex synergism of muscles over the front neck region. Proper evaluation of the muscular activities in this region would not only help to estimate phonation function, but may also provide characteristics to diagnose dysphonia. While surface electromyography (sEMG) technique has been used to study the physiological aspects of phonation in previous studies, it remains unclear if the phonating function could be dynamically characterized by the sEMG signals of the neck muscles associated with phonation.

In myoelectric prosthetic control, the motion classification performance would be decayed if an electromyography (EMG) pattern to be recognized differs significantly from the one used for classifier training. Generally, the training signals are acquired when a subject performs motions with a proper force. In practical use of a myoelectric prosthesis, however, the variation of force levels to do a motion would be inevitable, which will cause a change of EMG patterns.

Pharyngeal phase is a central hub of swallowing in which food bolus pass through from the oral cavity to the esophageal. Proper understanding of the muscular activities in the pharyngeal phase is useful for assessing swallowing function and the occurrence of dysphagia in humans. Textile electrodes are becoming an attractive means in the facilitation of surface electrical stimulation. However, the stimulation comfort of textile electrodes and the mechanism behind stimulation discomfort is still unknown. In this study, a textile stimulation electrode was developed using conductive fabrics and then its impedance spectroscopy, stimulation thresholds, and stimulation comfort were quantitatively assessed and compared with those of a wet textile electrode and a hydrogel electrode on healthy subjects.
