Hematology patients require central venous catheters for cancer treatment and nutrition, which increases their risk of intravascular device-associated bacteremia. In the absence of recent data, we investigated intravascular device-associated bacteremia in this specific context. A three-month surveillance was conducted annually in 27 hematology wards, using a protocol derived from the HAI-Net ICU ECDC protocol (2020-2024).

Background: Blood pressure (BP) control in haemodialysis (HD) patients is essential. Peri-dialytic BP levels do not accurately diagnose hypertension or predict the cardiovascular (CV) mortality.

Methods: In this study, we recruited 43 adult patients who had been on chronic HD for ≥3 months.

In recent years, the field of epitranscriptomics has witnessed significant breakthroughs with the identification of more than 150 different chemical modifications in different RNA species. It has become increasingly clear that these chemical modifications play an important role in the regulation of fundamental processes linked to cell fate and development. Further interest was sparked by the ability of the epitranscriptome to regulate pathogenesis.

Purpose: A leachable cyclic amide (caprolactam) can be found in normal saline (NS) and 5% dextrose in water (D5W) plastic bags widely used in clinical practice if they contain polyamide in a multilayer sheeting. This contamination and the parameters that could influence its content have never been studied in a public work such as a scientific publication.

Methods: Two independent laboratories validated a caprolactam dosing method and studied contamination levels in several containers.

Bone morphometry varies among dogs of different sizes and breeds. Studying these differences may help understand the predisposition of certain breeds for specific orthopedic pathologies. This study aimed to develop a statistical shape model (SSM) of the femur, patella, and tibia of dogs without any clinical orthopeadic abnormalities to analyze and compare morphological variations based on body weight and breed.

Lupus nephritis (LN) diagnosis and follow-up requires noninvasive biomarkers. Therefore, the added value of coupling the urinary soluble (s)CD163/creatinuria ratio with serological markers was evaluated in a real-world clinical practice. To this end, a monocentric and retrospective study was conducted in 139 SLE patients with biopsy-proven nephritis having an active LN (LN-A, n = 63 with a positive SLEDAI-renal score) or inactive (n = 76), as well as 98 non-renal SLE patients.

Background & Aims: Liver macrophages fulfill various homeostatic functions and represent an essential line of defense against pathogenic insults. However, it remains unclear whether a history of infectious disease in the liver leads to long-term alterations to the liver macrophage compartment.

Methods: We utilized a curable model of parasitic infection invoked by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei brucei to investigate whether infection history can durably reshape hepatic macrophage identity and function.

Objective Real-life management of patients with hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) among European Society of Hypertension Excellence Centres (ESH-ECs) is unclear : we aimed to investigate it. Methods A survey was conducted in 2023. The questionnaire contained 64 questions asking ESH-ECs representatives to estimate how patients with CKD are managed.

Article Synopsis
  • African bistable savannas are rich in biodiversity and require conservation efforts.
  • Forest restoration through natural regeneration, rather than human intervention like burning or planting, can enhance biodiversity and carbon stocks.
  • The decision to restore forests or protect savannas should be based on a deep understanding of the local environment and its specific needs.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 2023 survey by the European Society of Hypertension assessed the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with hypertension across 88 centers in 27 countries, finding that only 28% had preexisting CKD, and 30% exhibited resistant hypertension.
  • - The survey indicated inconsistent rates of recent kidney function tests and varying usage of important medications, showing higher rates of certain drugs when nephrologists were involved in the care team.
  • - Overall, the study highlighted significant gaps in CKD screening and treatment prior to referral for specialized care, suggesting that tailored initiatives could enhance management for patients with hypertension and CKD.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a highly prevalent disease and up to 83% of CRS patients suffer from olfactory dysfunction (OD). Because OD is specifically seen in those CRS patients that present with a type 2 eosinophilic inflammation, it is believed that type 2 inflammatory mediators at the level of the olfactory epithelium are involved in the development of this olfactory loss. However, due to the difficulties in obtaining tissue from the olfactory epithelium, little is known about the true mechanisms of inflammatory OD.

Synthetic organic polymers commonly are used in the construction of healthcare product and medical device components. Medical devices often are sterilized to ensure that they are free from viable microorganisms. A common technique to achieve this is using ionizing radiation, usually gamma.

This review proposes to look at the evolution of cardiomyopathy treatments in the light of advances in diagnostic techniques, which have enabled to move from a mechanistic to a phenotypic and then etiological approach. The article goes beyond the ejection fraction approach, and look at new therapies that target the pathophysiological pathways of cardiomyopathies, either by targeting the phenotype, or by targeting the etiology. The evolution of HCM treatments is detailed, culminating in the latest etiological treatments such as mavacamten in sarcomeric HCM, tafamidis in transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis and migalastat in Fabry disease.

Article Synopsis
  • A significant portion of potential global forest restoration lies in unstable mesic savannas in Africa, which can enhance carbon and biodiversity if protected from human-induced fires.
  • A study in the Democratic Republic of the Congo found that aboveground carbon recovery in an 88-ha savanna patch took about 17 years, with a long-term estimate suggesting up to 112 years to reach near old-growth forest carbon levels.
  • While species richness improved to 33.17% after 17 years, achieving full recovery of both species richness and composition may take 54 and 124 years, respectively, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and consideration of socio-economic and climate variability.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed current clinical practices for olfactory dysfunction (OD) among ENT surgeons, focusing on the differences between the UK and international approaches.
  • Most UK clinicians do not perform psychophysical smell testing, with rhinologists conducting it more frequently than non-rhinologists, while international respondents reported higher testing rates.
  • The survey highlighted barriers like time and funding, revealed a desire for more training in smell testing among 75% of participants, and noted that patient-reported outcomes are rarely used in both the UK and internationally.

Childhood maltreatment and mental health problems are common among young people placed out-of-home. However, evidence on the impact of maltreatment on the course of mental health problems in at-risk populations is sparse. The aim of this longitudinal study is twofold: (a) describe the course of mental health problems and the shift in symptom patterns among adolescents in youth residential care into young adulthood and (b) assess how childhood maltreatment is related to the course of mental health problems.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare how effective and safe different treatment schedules with azathioprine (AZA) and rituximab (RTX) are in preventing relapses in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis who are in complete remission.
  • - Researchers conducted trials that compared 18-month fixed RTX to AZA, 18-month fixed RTX to 18-month tailored RTX, and extended 36-month RTX therapy versus placebo, tracking patient outcomes over 84 months.
  • - Findings indicated that the 18-month fixed RTX regimen was significantly better at preventing major relapses compared to AZA and the tailored RTX approach, leading to a higher remission rate at the 84-month mark.
