Introduction: The field of genomics is rapidly evolving and has made significant impact on the diagnosis and understanding of rare and genetic diseases, in guiding precision medicine in cancer treatment, and in providing personalized risk assessment for disease development and treatment responses. However, according to the literature, there is widespread socio economic and racial inequities in the diagnosis, treatment, and in the use of genomic medicine services. This policy review sets out to explore the concept of equity in access to genomic care, the level of inclusion of equity and how it is addressed and what mechanisms are in place to achieve equity in genomic care in the international health policy.

Cardio-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome is a term to describe the interconnection between cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2020 estimated that 25% of participants had at least 1 CKM condition. It is proposed that CKM syndrome originates in excess and/or dysfunctional adipose tissue, which secretes proinflammatory and prooxidative products leading to damaged tissues in arteries, the heart, and the kidney, and reduction in insulin sensitivity.

A lack of infection prevention and control protections for essential industries in the United States led to increased risk and incidence of COVID-19 among essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the nation deems an industry essential during a disease outbreak, an ethical obligation exists to safeguard the health of workers who are at increased risk of being exposed to disease. The Global Center for Health Security at the University of Nebraska Medical Center began work to rapidly develop and disseminate infection prevention and control guidance for essential industries, such as meat processing.

We demonstrate the formation of a complex, multi-wavelength, three-dimensional laser beam configuration with integrated metasurface (MS) optics. Our experiments support the development of a compact Sr optical-lattice clock, which leverages magneto-optical trapping at 461 nm and 689 nm without bulk free-space optics. We integrate six mm-scale metasurfaces on a fused silica substrate and illuminate them with light from optical fibers.

  • Ex situ normothermic perfusion (ESNP) is a technique used to assess and recondition organs for transplantation, but it can lead to increased inflammation that may counteract its benefits.
  • A study analyzed gene expression in 31 livers undergoing ESNP, finding that proinflammatory genes were upregulated, especially in livers donated after circulatory death (DCD), but some genes related to repair were also activated.
  • Using a leucocyte filter during perfusion reduced the inflammatory response and improved gene expression related to energy production, suggesting it could enhance outcomes for livers undergoing ESNP.

The role of incretin-based therapies, including glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1RAs) and dual GLP-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonists, in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity has been increasingly recognized, along with significant cardiovascular (CV) benefits. Despite the clinical efficacy of incretin-based therapies, high costs, suboptimal access, limited insurance coverage, and therapeutic inertia present substantial barriers to widespread adoption. Overcoming these obstacles is essential for the equitable initiation, access, and utilization of incretin-based therapies.
