We present a case detailing the successful reconstruction of the hindfoot in a 15-year-old male patient who suffered a self-inflicted shotgun wound. The patient had multiple complex fractures in these bones, resulting in considerable bone loss and the destruction of the articular surface. Considering the extent of the injuries and the failure of prior intervention from an outside surgeon, traditional reconstruction methods would not have adequately addressed the severity of the damage.

Although the Haitian population in the United States continues to grow, there is a lack of instruments in Haitian Creole to assess risk factors associated with poor mental health such as migration-related stress. This study described the translation of the Demands of Immigration Scale (DIS) and evaluated psychometric properties, meaning equivalence, and understandability of the Haitian Creole/English DIS. I applied the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy translation procedures and recruited 76 first-generation Haitian immigrants to pilot test the DIS.

Article Synopsis
  • Ankle fractures are common, with a significant portion being unstable and requiring surgery. This study compares traditional plate-and-screw fixation with an intramedullary fibula nail for surgical treatment.
  • The research involves a review of 203 cases by a skilled surgeon, focusing on complications and the need for hardware removal over an average follow-up of about 18.8 months.
  • Results show that all fractures healed with minimal complications, suggesting fibula nails could be a safer alternative to traditional methods, potentially reducing complications and hardware removal needs.

Background: Foot and ankle soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare neoplasms associated with a high risk of local recurrence and metastasis. Although amputation is often performed, its impact on prognosis remains unknown. The aims of our systematic review were identifying risk factors for (1) disease-specific death, (2) local recurrence, (3) metastasis, and assessing (4) whether the type of surgery (amputation or limb-salvage) affected disease-specific survival.

In the present scoping review, we explore whether existing evidence supports the premise that social determinants of health (SDoH) affect immigrant health outcomes through their effects on the microbiome. We adapt the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities' research framework to propose a conceptual model that considers the intersection of SDoH, the microbiome, and health outcomes in immigrants. We use this conceptual model as a lens through which to explore recent research about SDoH, biological factors associated with changes to immigrants' microbiomes, and long-term health outcomes.

Introduction: Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, causing about 10 million deaths per year, 70 % of which occur in low- and middle-income countries. In the DRC, the absence of a national cancer registry is a handicap to the definition of a strategy to combat this disease. The purpose of this study is to establish an epidemiological profile of cancer in this laboratory in order to overcome this deficit in this part of the country.

Relocating and starting a new life in a foreign country may entail a constellation of new stressors for Haitian immigrants; thus, research that enhances our understanding of how this vulnerable population contextualizes migration-related stress is necessary. The objectives of this study were to: (a) identify what factors are associated with migration-related stress, and (b) describe which and why specific migration-related stressors were most significant from the perspective of those suffering from high migration-related stress post migration via the stress proliferation lens of the stress process model. In this mixed-methods, sequential, explanatory pilot study, first-generation Haitian immigrants ( = 76) were recruited to operationalize migration-related stress, using the Demands of Immigration Scale (DIS).
