Article Synopsis
  • The Western honey bee subspecies have evolved local traits, particularly in their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles, to help with desiccation prevention and communication in varying environments.
  • A comparison of six European subspecies showed no strong evidence that their CHC profiles adapted to the climatic conditions of their native ranges, with differences likely due to genetic drift or phylogenetic factors.
  • Foragers displayed more distinct CHC profiles than nurse bees, indicating adaptations related to their social roles, while foragers also had increased alkanes to possibly help them cope with environmental conditions.

Adequate fruit and vegetable (F and V) intake, as recommended by the World Health Organization (over 400 g/day), is linked to reduced chronic disease risk. However, human intervention trials, especially with whole F and V and in complex combinations, are lacking. The MiBlend Study explored the effects of various phytochemical-rich F and V combinations on chronic disease risk markers, phytochemical absorption, and gene expression in blood.

Introduction: Right ventricular (RV) fibrosis represents both adaptive and maladaptive responses to the overloaded RV condition. Its role in pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), which is the most common adult congenital heart disease (CHD), remains poorly understood.

Methods: We enrolled 65 participants aged ≥18 years old with uncorrected secundum ASD who had undergone clinically indicated right heart catheterization (RHC), divided into the non-PH group ( = 7), PH group ( = 42), and Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) group ( = 16).

Monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO (M)) is a promising material for various applications ranging from sensing to signature management and smart windows. Most applications rely on its reversible structural phase transition to rutile VO (VO (R)), which is accompanied by a metal-to-insulator transition. Bottom-up hydrothermal synthesis has proven to yield high quality monoclinic VO but requires toxic and highly reactive reducing agents that cannot be used outside of a research lab.

Background: Patients with bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) are at increased risk of falling and have poor quality of life. Several research groups are currently developing and investigating vestibular implants to treat BVP. The goal was to identify how many patients can be considered eligible for vestibular implantation.

This work introduces a polymeric backbone eutectogel (P-ETG) hybrid solid-state electrolyte with an -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) backbone for high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The NIPAM-based P-ETG is (electro)chemically compatible with commercially relevant positive electrode materials such as the nickel-rich layered oxide LiNiMnCoO (NMC622). The chemical compatibility was demonstrated through (physico)chemical characterization methods.

Objectives: Our objective was to characterize longitudinal patterns of viraemia and factors associated with viral suppression in people with HIV and low-level viraemia (LLV) during antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Methods: We included people with HIV in the EuResist Integrated Database with LLV following ART initiation after 2005. LLV was defined as two or more consecutive viral load (VL) measurements of 51-199 copies/mL 30-365 days apart after >12 months of ART.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study evaluates the G-RISK regression network using a diverse collection of 149,455 labeled fundus images from multiple reputable sources, confirming its strong performance across challenging data sets.
  • * The G-RISK model achieved high accuracy (AUC values ranging from 0.854 to 0.988) and sensitivity above the recommended threshold, demonstrating good generalizability, although further validation with prospective cohort studies is needed.

Introduction: NHS Blood and Transplant Tissue and Eye Services (TES) offer a serum eyedrop (SE) service to patients suffering from severe ocular surface disease. SE are prepared from serum collected at blood donation sessions; the serum is diluted 1:1 with physiological saline. Formerly, 3ml aliquots of diluted serum were aliquoted into glass bottles in a Grade B clean room.

Aim: To evaluate the MONA.health artificial intelligence screening software for detecting referable diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME), including subgroup analysis.

Methods: The algorithm's threshold value was fixed at the 90% sensitivity operating point on the receiver operating curve to perform the disease classification.

Aim: To investigate the association of bone mineral density (BMD) Z-scores with early-postoperative remission rate and clinical parameters in patients with Cushing's disease (CD).

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the records of patients diagnosed with CD. After the exclusion of 230 patients, 87 CD patients were finally enrolled.

In order to design learning environments that foster students' research skills, one can draw on instructional design models for complex learning, such as the 4C/ID model (in: van Merriënboer and Kirschner, Ten steps to complex learning, Routledge, London, 2018). However, few attempts have been undertaken to foster students' towards learning complex skills in environments based on the 4C/ID model. This study explores the effects of providing autonomy, competence and relatedness support (in Deci and Ryan, Psychol Inquiry 11(4): 227-268, https://doi.

Quasi-spherical undoped ZnO and Al-doped ZnO nanoparticles with different aluminum content, ranging from 0.5 to 5 at% of Al with respect to Zn, were synthesized. These nanoparticles were evaluated as photocatalysts in the photodegradation of the Rhodamine B (RhB) dye aqueous solution under UV-visible light irradiation.

Monitoring virus infections can be an important selection tool in honey bee breeding. A recent study pointed towards an association between the virus-free status of eggs and an increased virus resistance to deformed wing virus (DWV) at the colony level. In this study, eggs from both naturally surviving and traditionally managed colonies from across Europe were screened for the prevalence of different viruses.

Although digital personalized learning (DPL) is assumed to be beneficial for the student as well as the teacher, the implementation process of DPL tools can be challenging. Therefore, the aim of our study is to scrutinize teachers' perceptions towards the implementation of DPL in the classroom. A total of 370 teachers from primary and secondary education (students aged 6-18 years old) were questioned through an online survey.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the relationship between low-level viremia (LLV) and transient viral load blips during antiretroviral therapy (ART) and their implications for future virologic failure (VF) in individuals living with HIV-1.
  • Researchers analyzed data from a large European cohort, monitoring over 22,500 participants for 81,837 person-years, and found that both LLV and blips significantly increased the risk of VF compared to those achieving virologic suppression.
  • Notably, 35% of participants with LLV had drug-resistance mutations, highlighting the potential complications that arise from these viremia episodes during ART.

Purpose: Standard automated perimetry is the gold standard to monitor visual field (VF) loss in glaucoma management, but it is prone to intrasubject variability. We trained and validated a customized deep learning (DL) regression model with Xception backbone that estimates pointwise and overall VF sensitivity from unsegmented optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans.

Methods: DL regression models have been trained with four imaging modalities (circumpapillary OCT at 3.

Objectives: The Sepsis-3 definition states the clinical criteria for sepsis but lacks clear definitions of the underlying infection. To address the lack of applicable definitions of infection for sepsis research, we propose new criteria, termed the Linder-Mellhammar criteria of infection (LMCI). The aim of this study was to validate these new infection criteria.
