Context: Increased orbital tissue volume due to matrix expansion, orbital fibroblast (OF) proliferation and adipocyte differentiation are the hallmarks of thyroid eye disease (TED). Their combination with the presence of hyaluronan-bound excess water in the constrains of the bony orbit results in increased intraorbital pressure. High intraorbital pressure, along with changes in the mechanical properties of orbital tissues, may lead to the activation of mechanosensitive receptors.

Background: Malignant hyperthermia susceptibility (MHS) and acute pancreatitis (AP) share a common cellular pathomechanism that is Ca-overload of the muscle fiber and the pancreatic acinar cell (PAC). In the muscle, gain-of-function mutations of the ryanodine receptor (RyR1) make the Ca-release mechanism hypersensitive to certain ligands, including Ca, volatile anaesthetics and succinylcholine, creating a medical emergency when the patient is exposed to these drugs. As RyR1 was shown to contribute to Ca-overload in PAC, we presumed that pancreata of MHS individuals are more prone to AP.

Several ion currents in the mammalian ventricular myocardium are substantially regulated by the sympathetic nervous system via β-adrenergic receptor activation, including the slow delayed rectifier K current and the L-type calcium current. This study investigated the downstream mechanisms of β-adrenergic receptor stimulation by isoproterenol (ISO) on the inward rectifier (I) and the rapid delayed rectifier (I) K currents using action potential voltage clamp (APVC) and conventional voltage clamp techniques in isolated canine left ventricular cardiomyocytes. Evidence suggests that chronic cortisol excess may precede the development of an allostatic load, and that this association may be influenced by the level of work stress. This study aims to investigate the associations between hair cortisol concentration and the development of systemic allostatic load cross-sectionally and at a lag of four years, stratified by level of effort-reward imbalance. The sample consisted of respondents from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) who were in employment with hair cortisol measurements at baseline (wave 6), and allostatic load markers at baseline and follow-up (wave 8; n=411; 64 % female).

Thus, a researcher engaged primarily in significance testing may decide to follow up just the nonsignificant results with a test from another system of inference, such as equivalence tests (more generally, inference by intervals) or Bayes factors. We argue that many of the crises currently afflicting science can be associated with a present failure of science to sufficiently embody its own values. Here, we propose a response beyond mere crisis resolution based on the observation that an ethical framework of flourishing derived from the Buddhist tradition aligns surprisingly well with the values of science itself. This alignment, we argue, suggests a recasting of science from a competitively managed activity of knowledge production to a collaboratively organized moral practice that puts kindness and sharing at its core.

Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors are crucial components of differentiation, cellular homeostasis and the environmental stress defense of eukaryotes. In this work, we further studied the consequence of gene deletion and overexpression of two bZIP transcription factors, NapA and RsmA, on superoxide production, mitochondrial morphology and hyphal diameter of Aspergillus nidulans. We have found that reactive oxygen species production was influenced by both gene deletion and overexpression of napA under tert-butylhydroperoxide (tBOOH) elicited oxidative stress.
