Cuprous oxide (CuO) exhibit significant potential for catalytic activity in the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CORR). However, the rapid reduction of Copper(I) (Cu) to metallic Copper (Cu) leads to catalyst deactivation, significantly impacting product selectivity and stability. This study aims to stabilize the Cu valence state at a metal-CuO heterogeneous interface through interfacial engineering, ultimately enhancing the electrochemical CO reduction performance of CuO.

Article Synopsis
  • Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is crucial for malaria prevention, but parasite resistance poses a challenge, particularly concerning the Pfdhfr and Pfdhps genes associated with SP resistance.
  • A study on 508 P. falciparum isolates from West Africa showed high mutation rates in these genes, with common mutations like Pfdhfr N51I and Pfdhps A437G frequently observed across the region.
  • Despite high resistance, SP may still reduce low birthweight and maternal anemia, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring of resistance markers to guide effective malaria treatment strategies, especially in pregnant women and infants.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness and cost of AI application in community screening for blinding fundus diseases, comparing different screening methods over 30 years for residents starting at age 60.
  • Three scenarios were assessed: traditional manual grading, AI-assisted screening, and AI-assisted screening with process reengineering.
  • The results indicate that while both AI-assisted methods improved outcomes, the process reengineered approach was more cost-effective, costing less while achieving the same health benefits.

Influenza A virus (IAV) causes highly contagious respiratory disease worldwide, so prevention and control of IAV is extremely important. However, overuse of neuraminidase inhibitor (NAI) drugs leads to drug resistance. To explore the up-to-date geographical distribution and evolution of drug-resistant mutations (DRMs) in the NA protein of IAV, 81,492 near full-length NA sequences downloaded from NCBI and GISAID databases, including 34,481 H1N1 and 46,622 H3N2, were processed and analyzed.

Novel binder designs are shown to be fruitful in improving the electrochemical performance of silicon (Si)-based anodes. However, issues with mechanical damage from dramatic volume change and poor lithium-ion (Li) diffusion kinetics in Si-based materials still need to be addressed. Herein, an aqueous self-repairing borate-type binder (SBG) with a web-like architecture and high ionic conductivity is designed for Si and SiO electrodes.

Ultrahigh-capacity silicon (Si) anodes are essential for the escalating energy demands driven by the booming e-transportation and energy storage field. However, their practical applications are strictly hampered by their intrinsically low electroconductivity, sluggish Li-ion diffusion, and undesirably large volume change. Herein, a high-performance Si anode, comprised of a modulated soft/hard coating of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (as Li-ion conductor) and polyaniline (PANI) (as electron conductor) on the surface of Si nanoparticles (NPs) through H-bonding network, is introduced.

This study was to analyze the correlations of IL-1β and vitamin D (VitD) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test (CAT) score in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). For this purpose, a total of 65 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treated in our hospital between June 2020 and June 2022 were enrolled and assigned to a research group, and 40 healthy individuals who underwent physical examination in our hospital over the same time spanning were enrolled into the control group. The 65 COPD patients were further grouped into a stability group (30 cases) and an exacerbation group (35 cases).

Developing sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with high initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and long-term cycling stability is crucial to meet energy storage device requirements. Designing anode materials that could exhibit high ICE is a promising strategy to realize enhanced energy density in SIBs. A trifunctional network binder substantially improves the electrochemical performance and ICE, providing excellent mechanical properties and strong adhesion strength.

Background: Historically, malaria due to Plasmodium vivax has been epidemic in Henan Province, China, with Anopheles sinensis as the main vector. The most effective measures to prevent malaria transmission are based on vector control through the use of insecticides. However, insecticides exert a strong selective pressure on mosquito populations for insecticide resistance.

Saffron floral bio-residues (SFB) are a valuable natural source of antioxidants and dyes that can contribute to the development of new food products and cosmetic products. Color change was usually observed during SFB storage, which may result in quality degradation of SFB or even cause potential hazard to human health. In order to clarify the mechanism of color change of SFB sample, the chemical differences among SFB samples stored under different conditions were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and chemometrics methods, from which differential flavonols and anthocyanins were screened and their kinetic variations during sample storage summarized.
