Regulatory T cells modulate monocyte functions in immunocompetent antiretroviral therapy naive HIV-1 infected people.

We previously demonstrated that the overall number of regulatory T (Treg) cells decrease proportionately with helper CD4 T cells and their frequencies increase in antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infected individuals. The question now is whether the discrepancies in Treg cell numbers and frequencies are synonymous to an impairment of their functions. To address this, we purified Treg cells and assessed their ability to modulate autologous monocytes functions.

Alzheimer disease-related biomarkers and cancer-related cognitive decline: the Thinking and Living with Cancer study.

Purpose: We evaluated whether plasma Alzheimer disease (AD)-related biomarkers were associated with cancer-related cognitive decline among older breast cancer survivors.

Methods: We included survivors aged 60-90 years with primary stage 0-III breast cancers (n = 236) and frequency-matched noncancer control paricipant (n = 154) who passed a cognitive screen and had banked plasma specimens. Participants were assessed at baseline (presystemic therapy) and annually for up to 60 months.

Fabrication of maleic anhydride-acrylamide copolymer based sodium alginate hydrogel for elimination of metals ions and dyes contaminants from polluted water.

The study explores the synergy of biobased polymers and hydrogels for water purification. Polymer nanomaterial's, synthesized by combining acrylamide copolymer with maleic anhydride, were integrated into sodium alginate biopolymer using an eco-friendly approach. Crosslinking agents, calcium chloride and glutaraladehyde, facilitated seamless integration, ensuring non-toxicity, high adsorption performance, and controlled capacity.

Association between Sociodemographic Factors and Diarrhea in Children Under 5 Years in Rwanda.

Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of mortality and morbidity in children under 5 years old worldwide, and is the most common cause of malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa. In Rwanda, diarrhea is the third leading cause of death in children under 5 years old. This study examined the association between sociodemographic factors and diarrhea in children under 5 years using the data of 7,474 households in the 2014-2015 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey.

Histological, immunohistochemical, and genomic evaluation of excisional and diabetic wounds treated with human Wharton's jelly stem cells with and without a nanocarrier.

We showed in previous studies that human umbilical cord Wharton's jelly stem cells (hWJSCs) improved the healing rates of excisional and diabetic wounds in the mouse model. As an extension of those studies, we report here the more detailed quantitative histological, immunohistochemical, and genomic evaluation of biopsies from those excisional and diabetic wounds in an attempt to understand the mechanisms of the enhanced wound healing aided by hWJSCs. Prevalence and characterization of uropathogenic Escherichia coli harboring plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance in a Tunisian university hospital.

The prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants was investigated in a Tunisian collection of 300 uropathogenic Escherichia coli. PMQR genes were detected in 68 isolates (22.7%) as follows: aac(6')-Ib-cr (n=66), qnrB1 (n=3), qnrA6 (n=1), and qnrS1 (n=1).

Structure of a conserved Golgi complex-targeting signal in coronavirus envelope proteins.

Coronavirus envelope (CoV E) proteins are ∼100-residue polypeptides with at least one channel-forming α-helical transmembrane (TM) domain. The extramembrane C-terminal tail contains a completely conserved proline, at the center of a predicted β-coil-β motif. Based on the clinical presentation of some skin pigmentation disorders it is thought that a bicompartmental functional system exists in the epidermal melanocyte population. It corresponds to the perifollicular and interfollicular compartments, respectively. The present study was undertaken looking for the presence of such a system on scalp unaffected by pigmentary disorders.
