Molecular epidemiology of Enteritidis in humans and animals in Spain.

Enteritidis, the most prevalent serovar-causing human gastroenteritis, has been traditionally linked to poultry sources. Although antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not common in this serovar, increasing levels of resistance to fluoroquinolones and ampicillin have been reported in the last few years. Here, 298 isolates retrieved from different sources (human, livestock, wildlife, food, and environment) and years (2002-2021) in Spain were analyzed to evaluate their diversity, the distribution of AMR-conferring genes (ARGs), and mutations and reconstruct the epidemiology of infection due to this serovar.

Influence of spine biomechanics and sagittal balance on the outcome of lumbar discectomy.

Purpose: Spine biomechanics, particularly sagittal balance and spino-pelvic angulation are determinant factors in the understanding of lumbar degenerative disease. These concepts translated into objective measurements are progressively being integrated into clinical practice. The present study explores them as prognostic factors in patients undergoing lumbar microdiscectomy, which could help identify those at higher risk of surgical failure.

However, determining whether organic compounds are intrinsic to the meteorite or come from external (terrestrial) contamination is still controversial. This research explores the molecular distribution and carbon isotopic composition of three lipid families (hydrocarbons, alkanoic acids, and alcohols) as well as DNA extracted from the interior of a CO carbonaceous chondrite named El Médano 464 (EM 464), discovered in the Atacama Desert in 2019.

Co-morbid Indomethacin-Responsive Headaches in a Woman in Her Late 60s With Paroxysmal Hemicrania and Hypnic Headache: A Case Report.

Paroxysmal hemicrania (PH) and hypnic headache (HH) are rare indomethacin-responsive headache syndromes. This case report details the new onset of both disorders in a woman in her late 60s. One headache type presented as severe pain centered on the right eyebrow, lasting 30 minutes, occurring more than 8 times daily, and associated with ipsilateral lacrimation and rhinorrhea.

Effects of short-term dietary oxytetracycline treatment in the farmed fish Piaractus mesopotamicus.

Oxytetracycline (OTC), a key antibiotic used in global aquaculture, has still unclear ecotoxicological effects. In this study, freshwater fish Piaractus mesopotamicus were fed with diets containing 750 mg kg-1 either pure OTC (ATB1) or commercial OTC (ATB2) for 10 days (treatment period-TP), followed by a 21-day withdrawal period (depuration period-DP). Fish fed with ATB2 showed decreased hematocrit (at DP) and increased glucose levels (TP and DP).

Animal thermoregulation may have significant costs and compete directly or indirectly with other energetically demanding processes, such as immune function. Although the subterranean environment is characterized by thermally stable conditions, small changes in ambient temperature could be critical in shaping immunity. However, little is known about the effects of ambient temperature, in naturally varying ranges, on immunity of wild species.

Freshwater ecosystems are highly biodiverse and important for livelihoods and economic development, but are under substantial stress. To date, comprehensive global assessments of extinction risk have not included any speciose groups primarily living in freshwaters. Consequently, data from predominantly terrestrial tetrapods are used to guide environmental policy and conservation prioritization, whereas recent proposals for target setting in freshwaters use abiotic factors.

Combined systemic treatments in two patients with ductal salivary carcinoma.

Ductal carcinomas, a variant of salivary gland cancer, are characterized by concurrent androgen receptor (AR) positivity and overexpression of HER2, making them potential targets for tailored therapies extensively explored in literature. We present two consecutive cases of patients diagnosed with inoperable metastatic ductal carcinoma, both displaying HER2 overexpression and AR positivity, who underwent combination therapy involving chemotherapy and dual targeted agents. Both patients diagnosed with centralized inoperable ductal carcinoma were retrospectively analyzed and received trastuzumab, docetaxel, leuprolide and bicalutamida as first-line therapy until progression, defined by RECIST criteria.

Complications during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation transfer in Argentina: A multicenter observational study.

Background: There is a lack of documented cases regarding complications during ECMO transfer in middle-income countries. Using portable ECMO devices facilitates patient transport but entails significantly higher costs, necessitating evidence of their practical utility. This study aims to describe complications during ECMO transfer in Argentina and to compare complication rates between the integrated portable ECMO and non-portable ECMO systems.

Molecular Markers for Analyses of Genetic Diversity within the Complex with Emphasis on Argentine Populations.

The South American fruit fly (Wiedmann) has a vast range extending from northern Mexico, through Central America, to South America where it is an extremely polyphagous pest of wild and cultivated fruits. It is a complex of cryptic species currently composed of eight recognised morphotypes: "Mexican", "Venezuelan", "Andean", "Peruvian", "Ecuadorian", and the three Brazilian morphotypes "Brazilian-1", "Brazilian-2", and "Brazilian-3". Molecular markers that can identify the member species of the complex are crucial for the implementation of effective pest control measures, such as the sterile insect technique.

Hyperexpansion of genetic diversity and metabolic capacity of extremophilic bacteria and archaea in ancient Andean lake sediments.

Background: The Andean Altiplano hosts a repertoire of high-altitude lakes with harsh conditions for life. These lakes are undergoing a process of desiccation caused by the current climate, leaving terraces exposed to extreme atmospheric conditions and serving as analogs to Martian paleolake basins. Microbiomes in Altiplano lake terraces have been poorly studied, enclosing uncultured lineages and a great opportunity to understand environmental adaptation and the limits of life on Earth.

Cladribine use trend in Latin America: the changes in patient profile impact in the drug effectiveness.

Introduction: Cladribine was approved for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in our country in 2018. A previous study by our group showed that its use among high efficacy therapies options has been increasing along the years.

Objective: to analyze the cladribine use trend across time since its approval.

Sea spray allows for the growth of subaerial microbialites at the driest desert on Earth.

Due to its extreme conditions, microbial life in the Atacama Desert is known to survive in well-protected micro-habitats (hypolithic, endolithic, etc.), but rarely directly exposed to the environment, that is, epilithic habitats. Here we report a unique site, La Portada, a cliff confronting the Pacific Ocean in the Coastal Range of this desert, in which the constant input of water provided by the sea spray allows for the growth of a black-colored epilithic subaerial microbial ecosystem.

The morphological evolution of the appendicular skeleton may reflect the selective pressures specific to different environments, phylogenetic inheritance, or allometry. Covariation in bone shapes enhances morphological integration in response to ecological specializations. The resultant intricate surface units emerge from a complex interplay among microbiota and plant communities. Under these conditions, host rocks undergo initial weathering through microbial activity, rendering them far from pristine and challenging the quest for biomarkers in ancient sedimentary rocks.

Lipid-based paleoecological and biogeochemical reconstruction of Store Saltsø, an extreme lacustrine system in SW Greenland.

Polar lakes harbour a unique biogeochemistry that reflects the implications of climatic fluctuations against a susceptible yet extreme environment. In addition to polar, Store Saltsø (Kangerlussuaq, southwestern Greenland) is an endorheic lake with alkaline and oligotrophic waters that host a distinctive ecology adapted to live in such particular physico-chemical and environmental conditions. By exploring the sedimentary record of Store Saltsø at a molecular and compound-specific isotopic level, we were able to understand its ecology and biogeochemical evolution upon climate change.

Haemovigilance survey and screening strategy for arthropod-borne viruses in blood donors from Argentina.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) count among emerging infections, which represent a major challenge for transfusion safety worldwide. To assess the risk of arboviruses-transmission by transfusion (ATT), we performed a survey to evaluate the potential threat for transfusion safety. Samples were retrospectively and randomly collected from donors who donated during the peak of dengue incidence in Cordoba (years: 2016 and 2019-2022).

Geomicrobiological characterization of the evaporitic ecosystem in the hypersaline lake Laguna Verde (Andean Puna, Northwestern Argentina).

Laguna Verde's dome-shaped structures are distinctive formations within the Central Andes, displaying unique geomicrobiological features. This study represents a pioneering investigation into these structures, assessing their formation, associated taxa, and ecological significance. Through a multifaceted approach that includes chemical analysis of the water body, multiscale characterization of the domes, and analysis of the associated microorganisms, we reveal the complex interplay between geology and biology in this extreme environment.

Breakthrough infection by hepatitis B virus in a vaccinated blood donor: An emerging threat for transfusion safety in low-endemic countries?

We present the case of a breakthrough infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV), intending to warn about the challenge that HBV represents for transfusion safety. Virological markers for HBV infection were assayed during a blood donor screening by detection of HBsAg, anti-HBc, and viral nucleic acid (HBV DNA) by a nucleic acid test (NAT). Additionally, samples were analyzed for detection of immunoglobulin M anti-HBc, HBeAg, anti-HBe, and anti-HBs.
