To date, comprehensive global assessments of extinction risk have not included any speciose groups primarily living in freshwaters. Ductal carcinomas, a variant of salivary gland cancer, are characterized by concurrent androgen receptor (AR) positivity and overexpression of HER2, making them potential targets for tailored therapies extensively explored in literature. We present two consecutive cases of patients diagnosed with inoperable metastatic ductal carcinoma, both displaying HER2 overexpression and AR positivity, who underwent combination therapy involving chemotherapy and dual targeted agents. Both patients diagnosed with centralized inoperable ductal carcinoma were retrospectively analyzed and received trastuzumab, docetaxel, leuprolide and bicalutamida as first-line therapy until progression, defined by RECIST criteria.

The South American fruit fly (Wiedmann) has a vast range extending from northern Mexico, through Central America, to South America where it is an extremely polyphagous pest of wild and cultivated fruits. It is a complex of cryptic species currently composed of eight recognised morphotypes: "Mexican", "Venezuelan", "Andean", "Peruvian", "Ecuadorian", and the three Brazilian morphotypes "Brazilian-1", "Brazilian-2", and "Brazilian-3". Molecular markers that can identify the member species of the complex are crucial for the implementation of effective pest control measures, such as the sterile insect technique.

Background: The Andean Altiplano hosts a repertoire of high-altitude lakes with harsh conditions for life. These lakes are undergoing a process of desiccation caused by the current climate, leaving terraces exposed to extreme atmospheric conditions and serving as analogs to Martian paleolake basins. Microbiomes in Altiplano lake terraces have been poorly studied, enclosing uncultured lineages and a great opportunity to understand environmental adaptation and the limits of life on Earth.

Due to its extreme conditions, microbial life in the Atacama Desert is known to survive in well-protected micro-habitats (hypolithic, endolithic, etc.), but rarely directly exposed to the environment, that is, epilithic habitats. Here we report a unique site, La Portada, a cliff confronting the Pacific Ocean in the Coastal Range of this desert, in which the constant input of water provided by the sea spray allows for the growth of a black-colored epilithic subaerial microbial ecosystem.

The morphological evolution of the appendicular skeleton may reflect the selective pressures specific to different environments, phylogenetic inheritance, or allometry. Covariation in bone shapes enhances morphological integration in response to ecological specializations. Polar lakes harbour a unique biogeochemistry that reflects the implications of climatic fluctuations against a susceptible yet extreme environment. In addition to polar, Store Saltsø (Kangerlussuaq, southwestern Greenland) is an endorheic lake with alkaline and oligotrophic waters that host a distinctive ecology adapted to live in such particular physico-chemical and environmental conditions. By exploring the sedimentary record of Store Saltsø at a molecular and compound-specific isotopic level, we were able to understand its ecology and biogeochemical evolution upon climate change.

Laguna Verde's dome-shaped structures are distinctive formations within the Central Andes, displaying unique geomicrobiological features. We present the case of a breakthrough infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV), intending to warn about the challenge that HBV represents for transfusion safety. In the search for life in our Solar System, Mars remains a promising target based on its proximity and similarity to Earth. When Mars transitioned from a warmer, wetter climate to its current dry and freezing conditions, any putative extant life probably retreated into habitable refugia such as the subsurface or the interior of rocks. Terrestrial cryptoendolithic microorganisms ( those inhabiting rock interiors) thus represent possible modern-day Mars analogs, particularly those from the hyperarid McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica.

The eukaryotic genome, first packed into nucleosomes of about 150 bp around the histone core, is organized into euchromatin and heterochromatin, corresponding to the A and B compartments, respectively. Here, we asked if individual nucleosomes in vivo know where to go. Serpentinization is a well-known aqueous alteration process that may have played important roles in the origins and early evolution of life on Earth, and perhaps Mars, but there are still aspects related to biomarker distribution, partitioning, and preservation that merit further study. To assess the role that precipitation of carbonate phases in serpentinization settings may have on biomarker preservation, we search for life signs in one of the world's largest outcrops of subcontinental peridotites (Ronda, South Spain). We investigate the organic record of groundwater and associated carbonate deposits (travertines) in seven hyperalkaline springs, and reconstruct the biological activity and metabolic interactions of the serpentinization-hosted ecosystem.

In this work, a geological sample of great astrobiological interest was studied through analytical techniques that are currently operating in situ on Mars and others that will operate in the near future. The sample analyzed consisted of an oncoid, which is a type of microbialite, collected in the Salar Carachi Pampa, Argentina. The main peculiarity of microbialites is that they are organo-sedimentary deposits formed by the in situ fixation and precipitation of calcium carbonate due to the growth and metabolic activities of microorganisms.
