Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine the clinical and epidemiological data regarding impaired functional outcomes, specifically low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), following rectal surgery for tumors.
  • It involved a retrospective analysis of 42 patients treated between 2009 and 2021, revealing that approximately 50% developed LARS, with major LARS occurring in 14 patients.
  • The researchers identified age and advanced tumor stage (pT3T4) as independent risk factors for major LARS, suggesting that these factors should be considered in managing rectal cancer patients.

Chronic asymptomatic retention of an intragastric foreign body can pose a life-threatening scenario. In the event of migration, it may result in perforation, as shown in our unique case of pericardial perforation through the fundus. Beyond illustrating a rare condition, this case prompts us to engage in a debate about whether to retain or remove asymptomatic foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract.

was recently shown to be a powerful model for studying and identifying probiotics with specific functions. CL1285, LBC80R, and CLR2, which are three bacteria that were marketed by Bio-K+, were evaluated using the nematode to study fat accumulation, lifespan, and resistance to oxidative stress. Although the general effects of probiotics in terms of protection against oxidative stress were highlighted, the CL1285 strain had an interesting and specific feature, namely its ability to prevent fat accumulation in nematodes; this effect was verified by both the Oil Red and Nile Red methods.

Background: Pulmonary hypoplasia, Diaphragmatic anomalies, Anophthalmia/microphthalmia and Cardiac defects delineate the PDAC syndrome. We aim to identify the cause of PDAC syndrome in patients who do not carry pathogenic variants in and , which have been previously associated with this disorder.

Methods: We sequenced the exome of patients with unexplained PDAC syndrome and performed functional validation of candidate variants.

Dyslipidemia, specifically abnormal levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), is an important risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Evidence showing the promising abilities of probiotics to lower total cholesterol or LDL-C has, however, not yet convinced experts to recommend probiotic bacteria as treatment for blood lipid management. Therefore, there are opportunities for the development of new efficient cholesterol-lowering probiotics.

Purpose: Intestinal ischemia (II) is the most critical factor to determine in patients with incarcerated groin hernia (IGH) because II could be reversible, and it is considered as a "time sensitive condition." Although predictive factors of II were identified in several previous studies, preoperative diagnosis of II cannot be reliably made or excluded by any known parameter. The aims of this study were: to devise and to validate a clinic-biologic score, with a strong discriminatory power, for predicting the risk of II in patients with IGH.

Breast-cancer (BC) is the most common invasive cancer in women, with considerable death. Given that, BC is classified as a hormone-dependent cancer, when it collides with pregnancy, different questions may arise for which there are still no convincing answers. To deal with this issue, two new frameworks are proposed within this paper: CoRaM and Dist-CoRaM.

In order to manage the urgent psychological need for support in response to the anticipated reaction of the population to the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a new psychological crisis intervention model by implementing a centralised psychological support system for all of Tunisia. We set up a helpline which is accessible throughout the country, including those without access to Internet. This model integrates medical students, child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychiatrists, psychologists and social services to provide psychological intervention to the general population and medical staff.
