Since abdominal adhesion are quite problematic in abdominal and pelvic surgery, the conventional HA/CMC film are commonly used as an anti-adhesive material. However, such types are difficult to be rolled and delivered through the port of laparoscopic surgical devices due to adherence to the laparoscopic port or other parts of the films. To create an anti-adhesion film with more favorable handling properties and anti-adhesive effect, we developed a novel punctate uneven gelatin film (PU GF).

Background: Somatic symptoms, such as chronic pain, fatigue, and gastrointestinal disturbances, are commonly reported in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM), which includes various forms of abuse and neglect experienced before age 18. Although CM is strongly associated with somatic symptoms, the specific relationships between CM subtypes and these symptoms, as well as the mechanisms connecting them, remain insufficiently understood. This review examines the complex interaction between CM and somatic symptoms, which often coexist with mental disorders and significantly impact quality of life and healthcare systems.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) causes progressive and irreversible damage to the kidneys. Renal biopsies are essential for diagnosing the etiology and prognosis of CKD, while accurate quantification of tubulo-interstitial injuries from whole slide images (WSIs) of renal biopsy specimens is challenging with visual inspection alone.

Methods: We develop a deep learning-based method named DLRS to quantify interstitial fibrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration as tubulo-interstitial injury scores, from WSIs of renal biopsy specimens.

Article Synopsis
  • Suboptimal outcomes in unstable pertrochanteric fractures may be influenced by muscular factors, particularly weakness in the gluteal muscles, rather than just bone integrity.
  • The study aimed to investigate the correlation between gluteal muscle size and density in patients with stable versus unstable fractures, hypothesizing that weaker muscles would lead to more unstable fractures.
  • A retrospective analysis of 111 geriatric patients with pertrochanteric fractures was conducted, assessing demographic data and muscle metrics, using multivariate logistic regression to identify predictors of fracture stability.

Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) cleaves amyloid beta (Aβ), insulin, and other bioactive peptides. Because Aβ and insulin are closely related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), respectively, IDE is a candidate drug target for treating both AD and T2DM. However, the activity of IDE has opposing effects, including decreasing AD risk by degrading Aβ and increasing T2DM risk by degrading insulin.
