Autosomal recessive nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (ARNDI) is a rare disease usually seen in patients with consanguineous parents. We report on a case of ARNDI in a patient with non-consanguineous parents who presented with recurrent febrile attacks. The differential diagnosis of ARNDI was made by desmopressin infusion test.

Effects of muscle strengthening versus aerobic exercise program in fibromyalgia.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of aerobic training with a muscle-strengthening program in patients with fibromyalgia. Thirty women with fibromyalgia were randomized to either an aerobic exercise (AE) program or a strengthening exercise (SE) program for 8 weeks. Outcome measures included the intensity of fibromyalgia-related symptoms, tender point count, fitness (6-min walk distance), hospital anxiety and depression (HAD) scale, and short-form health survey (SF-36).

Semi-rigid ureterorenoscopy in children without ureteral dilatation.

Objectives: We aimed to retrospectively review the efficiency of ureterorenoscopy (URS) applied without ureteral dilatation for evaluating pediatric ureteral pathologies.

Methods: The files of pediatric patients hospitalized in our clinic between January 2000 and June 2006 due to ureteral stone disease were reviewed and evaluated retrospectively. The ages, medical histories, physical examination results, preoperative routine blood and urinary tests, and culture results were recorded.

The relationship between taurine and 3-nitrotyrosine level of hepatocytes in experimental endotoxemia.

It has been proposed that taurine may function as an oxidant in a dose-dependent manner in vivo and in vitro. The present study was carried out to investigate the relationship between taurine concentration and 3-nitrotyrosine level, a stable marker of peroxynitrite action, in hepatocytes of guinea pig in endotoxemia before and after taurine administration. The levels of taurine and 3-nitrotyrosine were measured by HPLC method.

Reno-vascular hypertension in childhood: a nationwide survey.

Renovascular disease accounts for 8-10% of all cases of paediatric hypertension, whereas, in adults, its incidence is approximately 1%. The Turkish Paediatric Hypertension Group aimed to create the first registry database for childhood renovascular hypertension in Turkey. Twenty of the 28 paediatric nephrology centres in Turkey responded to the survey and reported 45 patients (27 girls, 18 boys) with renovascular hypertension between 1990 and 2005.

Protracted familial mediterranean fever arthritis presenting as septic arthritis.

In Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), arthritis is the initial symptom in 25% of patients. Although FMF arthritis is acute and self-limited, in 5% of cases protracted arthritis usually affecting large joints such as knee may occur. In this report, two cases are presented who were initially diagnosed as septic arthritis, first of which had four and the second had two synovectomy operations with the diagnosis of septic arthritis.

Patients And Methods: The BMI, BFP, BFM values of patients, who were treated by SWL due to upper urinary system stone disease (pelvis renalis, upper ureter, kidney lower and upper calices) between January and December 2005 in our hospital's urolithiasis center, were measured. Patients with stones smaller than 5 mm or larger than 20 mm and patients who had a stone localized somewhere other than in the upper urinary system, were not included in the study.

In this study, we aimed to assess the relationship between PTEN expression and estrogen, progesterone receptors (PRs), other apoptosis-related proteins, such as bcl-2 and bax, and apoptotic index (AI) in EEC, its precursor lesion hyperplasia, and cyclical endometrium. We also evaluated the relationship between PTEN expression and clinicopathologic parameters.

Successful management of primary hypomagnesaemia with high-dose oral magnesium citrate: a case report.

Objective: Differences in iodine intake could account for the variable prevalences reported for somatic TSH receptor (TSHR) mutations in toxic thyroid nodules (TTNs). However, this question has not been settled, since no study has yet determined the TSHR mutation prevalence in regions with different iodine supplies in the same population using the same methodology. Therefore, we studied the prevalence of somatic TSHR mutations in TTNs from patients living in iodine-deficient or -sufficient regions in Turkey.

Acute effects of gentamicin on glomerular and tubular functions in preterm neonates.

It has been reported that gentamicin causes natriuresis, magnesuria and calciuria in neonates. The aim of this study was to determine the acute effects of trough and peak levels of gentamicin on the values of serum creatinine (SCr), urine albumin/urine creatinine (UA/UCr), fractional excretion of sodium and potassium (FENa, FEK) and urine calcium/urine creatinine (UCa/UCr) in preterm neonates treated with gentamicin for suspected infection. Baseline levels of serum and urine Cr, Na and K and urine albumin and Ca levels together with trough and peak gentamicin levels were measured in 61 preterm neonates at the start of the therapy, on the day of the third gentamicin dose and 48-72 h after the cessation of the gentamicin therapy.

CD10 expression in urothelial bladder carcinomas: a pilot study.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate the expression of CD10 in normal bladder tissue and urothelial bladder carcinomas and to clarify its association with histopathological variables.

Objective: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of obesity and to obtain the age and gender-specific body mass index (BMI) percentiles in a cohort of children aged 6-17 years, living in the province of Antalya, Turkey.

Methods: The study included 15 schools throughout the city center of Antalya, Turkey during the period November 2002-March 2003. A total of 2465 school children (boys 1233, girls 1232) aged 6-17 years were chosen using a population based stratified cluster sampling method.

An unusual case of chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome with psychiatric disorder, hypoparathyroidism and precocious puberty.

Deletions of chromosome 22q11 cause a wide range of phenotypes; even affected members from the same family may present with different phenotype. We present an 11-3/12 year-old boy who has 22q11 deletion in a hitherto unreported combination with psychiatric disorder, hypoparathyroidism and precocious puberty. Whether precocious puberty is a clue for chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome is also discussed.
