After puncture or catheterization of the accessory nasal sinuses, the intensity of helium-neon laser inserted into the cavity under examination was recorded by means of a specially designed manipular. The laser beam intensity that penetrated the wall was found to correspond to the degree of its inflammation. The high level of objective information obtained allows assessment of pathological developments and therapeutic effectiveness.

Bronchoscopic laser operative interventions with the use of yttrium- aluminum -garnet laser were carried out in 36 patients with various pathological structures of the trachea. Laser endosurgery was applied as radical and palliative types of therapy. Endoscopic laser interventions make it possible to remove completely benign and carcinoid tumors, correct some types of cicatricial stenoses, restore continuity of the trachea, and remove respiratory insufficiency in inoperable malignant neoplasms with exophytic growth.

Local and general reactions have been studied after subjecting a rabbit eye to dispersed helium-neon laser radiation, 8 x 10(-6) wt/cm-2, 10 min daily for 10 days. There were recorded increase of blood filling of the uveal tract of the eye, changes in the indices of systemic hemodynamics, systolic and diastolic pressure, stroke and minute volume of blood volume, activation of separate links of antioxidant system connected both with oxidation-reduction of thiol disulfide system and the functioning of antiperoxide enzymes. The activation of antioxidant system has a local character, the changes in the retina of the eye and pigmented epithelium is expressed stronger than in the peripheral blood.

The phenomenon of a "local punch" of tissues in the zone of nano- or picosecond impulses of neodymium: YAG-laser radiation focusing allows to increase energy in the pulse by one order as compared with traditionally used energy. At this, in order to achieve the initial effect it becomes possible to reduce the number of shots by two orders and thus to increase the spot of radiation. The summary energy of action absorbed in the eye remains the same and that's why the number of complications doesn't increase.

Manipulators with monofibre light-guides have been specially designed for otorhinolaryngologic instruments commonly used in routine drug therapy for intracavital treatments. Quartz enclosed in a protective polyethylene sheath is used as the monofibre light-guide with a light conductor 400 microns in diameter and 2 to 3 m in length. It can be built in the following instruments: an ear catheter, a maxillary sinus lavage cannula, a subclavian artery catheter, and a laryngeal bougie.
