Anaesthetic management of neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism.

Neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism (NPHP) is a rare disease that presents in the first 6 months of life. It is almost invariably fatal unless a prompt diagnosis is made and urgent surgical intervention is instituted. Patients with hyperparathyroidism require special preoperative considerations.

Pain assessment and management in different wards of a tertiary care hospital.

Objective: To assess the pain management by medical team, emergency room (ER) team and Acute Pain team in a tertiary care hospital.

Methods: The cross-sectional study was done in Medical Ward, Surgical Ward and Emergency Room of Aga Khan University, Karachi, in March-April 2010. The assigned research medical officer visited the three locations every day and selected patients by way of convenient sampling.

Effect of addition of tramadol to one MAC sevoflurane on the haemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of tramadol 2 mg/kg on haemodynamic response to tracheal intubation where the end tidal concentration of sevoflurane was kept constant at 1 MAC (2%).

Study Design: Double blind randomized controlled trial.

Place And Duration Of Study: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from January 2009 to April 2009.

Emergency airway management of a patient with tracheal stenosis.

We are presenting a case of a 26 year old healthy male, who came with gradual worsening of dyspnoea following prolonged intubation and ventilation, after a road traffic accident five months back. On arrival in ER, he was hypoxaemic with severe respiratory distress. He was transferred to the operation room (OR) for emergency tracheostomy.

Necrotizing nocardia pneumonia in an immuno-compromised male.

A case of pulmonary nocardiosis in a 43-year-old male is reported who was on corticosteroids for diffuse parenchymal lung disease. Despite early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the response to therapy was poor likely to be due to delayed presentation.
