Intensive care unit (ICU) strain, characterized by a discrepancy between perceived or actual intensive care resources and demand, significantly impacts patient outcomes and healthcare worker well-being. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic exacerbated ICU strain, leading to increased mortality and extended hospital stays, affecting both critically ill patients with and without COVID-19. A systematic review identified 16 leading and lagging indicators of ICU capacity strain, including queuing, premature and after-hours ICU discharge, use of temporary space, length of stay, burnout, staffing and nurse-to-patient ratio, ICU census, acuity and turnover, standardized mortality ratio, readmissions, availability of critical supplies, ventilator use, and surgery cancellation.

We determined how patients undergoing lung transplant evaluation experience uncertainty and communication about the future from clinicians.
Methods: We performed a convergent parallel mixed-methods study using a cross-sectional survey and semistructured interviews.
Race-conscious research identifies health disparities with 1) rigorous and responsible data collection, 2) intentionality and considered analyses, and 3) interpretation of results that advance health equity. Individual registries must overcome specific challenges to promote race-conscious research, and this paper describes ways to achieve this with a focus on the international Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry. This article reviews ELSO registry publications that studied race with outcomes to consider whether research outputs align with race-conscious concepts and describe the direction of associations reported.

Qualitative interviews about campus and community resources for sexual and relationship violence were conducted with 29 undergraduate and graduate students who held diverse sexual, gender, and racial identities ( = 15 disclosed violence-related service-seeking). Organized within trauma-informed care pillars, thematic coding revealed aspects of campus environment/culture that prevent students from accessing support including challenges identifying experiences as violence; limited cultural and identity-affirming care; limited clarity about resources; confidentiality concerns; difficulty accessing resources; and navigating resources alone.

Most of the literature focuses on outcomes at the end of therapy when it may be too late for intervention to improve the outcomes. So, the present study addresses outcomes by the end of intensive course of therapy.

Despite significant progress in unravelling the pathophysiology of CINP, the clinical translation of this knowledge into tangible outcome remains elusive. Here, we employed behavioural and pharmacological approaches to establish and validate a novel combination-based chemotherapeutic model of peripheral neuropathy.

Design: Cross-sectional survey.
Setting: A 17-bed cardiothoracic ICU at a tertiary care academic hospital in Colorado.
Objectives: To define healthcare trajectories after tracheostomy to inform shared decision-making efforts for critically ill patients.
Design: Retrospective epidemiologic cohort study.
Setting: California Patient Discharge Database 2018-2019.
Reports of poor outcomes among older adults with COVID-19 may have changed patient perceptions of Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) orders or caused providers to pressure older adults into accepting DNR orders to conserve resources. We determined early-DNR utilization during COVID-19 surges compared with nonsurge periods among nonsurgical adults ≥75 and its connection to hospital mortality. We conducted a retrospective cohort study among adults ≥75 years using the California Patient Discharge Database 2020.

Studies evaluating the weekend effect in intensive care units (ICUs) have arrived at conflicting results. Identifying a weekend effect for critically-ill patients may inform clinical care pathways and resource allocation.

To determine if disparities exist in patient selection for ECMO based on sex, primary insurance, and median income of the patient's neighborhood. In a retrospective cohort study using the Nationwide Readmissions Database 2016-2019, we identified patients treated with mechanical ventilation (MV) and/or ECMO with billing codes.

Background: Providing palliative care to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a priority. Spirometry demonstrating airflow limitation is a diagnostic test for COPD and a common inclusion criterion for palliative care research. However, requiring spirometry with airflow limitation may exclude appropriate patients unable to complete spirometry, or patients with preserved-ratio impaired spirometry and symptoms or imaging consistent with COPD.

This study aimed to estimate the risk factors, symptoms and signs, treatment outcome and prognosis of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) patients.
Methods: This is an interventional study of 35 patients diagnosed and managed as CAM at a tertiary care centre in New Delhi, India.
Background: Mucormycosis is a potentially lethal, angioinvasive fungal infection caused by the Mucoracea family comprising Mucor, Rhizopus, and Absidia species. It is commonly associated with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, the use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and Covid-19 infection. The occurrence of mucormycosis in an immunocompetent patient is rare.

Background: Cognitive therapy and behavioural activation are both widely applied and effective psychotherapies for depression, but it is unclear which works best for whom. Individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis allows for examining moderators at the participant level and can provide more precise effect estimates than conventional meta-analysis, which is based on study-level data.
Aims: This article describes the protocol for a systematic review and IPD meta-analysis that aims to compare the efficacy of cognitive therapy and behavioural activation for adults with depression, and to explore moderators of treatment effect.

Purpose: To determine exophthalmometry values (EV) in the north Indian population and to find its correlation with the age, gender, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), locality, and base value of the population.
Methods: A total of 1000 eligible participants with 504 females and 496 males with age >5 years were included in this observational cross-sectional study. Age, gender, and locality of the subjects were noted.
The purpose of this study was to describe the single-triangle technique for congenital ptosis repair with a frontalis sling in blepharophimosis patients. The single-triangle technique was used in 40 eyes of 20 patients of blepharophimosis syndrome. The center point of the lid is marked.

Introduction: Risks and outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) are believed to vary relative to the surgical approach. This study compares the supine anterior-based muscle-sparing (ABMS) approach with its modern-day counterparts.
Methods: A retrospective review was done on 550 patients undergoing primary or revision THA from 2016 to 2018.
