Hyperglycemia is associated with increased in-hospital morbidity and mortality, especially in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Propofol, a common anesthetic used in the ICU, may cause hyperglycemia by inducing insulin resistance, reducing insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in muscles, and attenuating insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose. We present the case of a 58-year-old female who was admitted for sepsis secondary to cellulitis but required intubation for respiratory failure.

Current hardware watermarking techniques fall short either in terms of watermark strength (size of covert constraints generated) or number of security layers/variables involved in the security constraints generation process. This paper presents a novel approach for high level synthesis (HLS) watermarking by bio-mimicking DNA fingerprint profiling to counter hardware IP piracy.

This paper presents a security aware design methodology to design secure generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) hardware intellectual property (IP) core for electrocardiogram (ECG) detector against IP piracy and fraudulent claim of IP ownership threats. Integrating authentic (secure version) GLRT hardware IP core in the system-on-chip (SoC) of ECG detectors is paramount for reliable operation and estimation of ECG parametric data, such as Q wave, R wave and S wave (QRS) complex detection. A pirated GLRT hardware IP integrated into an ECG detector may result in an unreliable/erratic estimation of ECG parametric data that can be hazardous and fatal for the end patient.

Microdose Lithium Protects against Pancreatic Islet Destruction and Renal Impairment in Streptozotocin-Elicited Diabetes.

Psychiatric use of lithium has been associated with hypoglycemic effects, but its effect on type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is unknown. In streptozotocin (STZ) induced murine models of T1D, microdose lithium therapy improved hyperglycemia, attenuated body weight loss and prevented early signs of diabetic kidney injury. This beneficial effect was associated with preservation of pancreatic islet histology and β-cell production of insulin as well as mitigated oxidative damage of islets.

The present work estimates the increased risk of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 by establishing the linkage between the mortality rate in the infected cases and the air pollution, specifically Particulate Matters (PM) with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 10 µm and ≤ 2.5 µm. Data related to nine Asian cities are analyzed using statistical approaches, including the analysis of variance and regression model.
