Introduction: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of sight-threatening infections in the US. These strains pose a significant challenge in managing ocular infections, as they frequently exhibit resistance to first-line empirical antibiotics. To assess the potential of bacteriophages as innovative topical therapies for treatment of recalcitrant ocular infections, we evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of a set of anti-S.

Developing sensitive sensors to trimethylamine (TMA) remains a topic of great interest in areas such as food quality analysis and disease biomarkers. To address this issue, chemiresistive sensors were proposed using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with different proportions of hydroxyl (GQDs-OH), epoxy (GQDs-epoxy), and carboxyl (GQDs-COOH) groups. These materials exhibited different sensitivities to TMA, with GQDs-OH being the most sensitive, presenting a detection limit of 0.

In this work, a novel mathematical algorithm was described for the development of a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stability-indicating assay. This approach was applied for the stability study of a universal cancer peptide-based telomerase vaccine constituted of a mixture of two peptides. With only 18 experiments, the optimum HPLC gradient conditions were determined using a computer-assisted design of experiments-simplex algorithm software.

Introduction: Natural Killer (NK) cells hold significant promise as therapeutic agents in immuno-oncology due to their ability to target and eliminate cancerous and infected cells without causing graft-versus-host disease or cytokine release syndrome. However, the limited availability of robust, scalable methods for generating clinical-grade NK cells remains a limiting factor to broader clinical application.

Methods: Here we report the development of a novel feeder-cell-free culture system optimized for producing NK cells from cord blood-derived CD34 hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs).

Background: Standard adjuvant treatment of stage III colon cancer (CC) is fluoropyrimidine with oxaliplatin. Recently, stage III was subdivided into low-risk (T1-3, N1) and high-risk (T4 and/or N2), with the benefit of adding oxaliplatin varying across these substages. In this study, we aimed to assess the impact of oxaliplatin on survival outcomes in subdividing stage III CC patients based on T and N staging.

Background: Alternative splicing of Titin (TTN) I-band exons produce protein isoforms with variable size and elasticity, but the mechanisms whereby TTN splice factors regulate exon usage and thereby determining cardiomyocyte passive stiffness and diastolic function, is not well understood. Non-coding RNA transcripts from the antisense strand of protein-coding genes have been shown to regulate alternative splicing of the sense gene. The TTN gene locus harbours >80 natural antisense transcripts (NATs) with unknown function in the human heart.

Background: Schizophrenia (SZ) commonly manifests through multiple relapses, each impeding the path to recovery and incurring personal and societal costs. Despite the identification of various risk factors associated to the risk of relapse, the development of accurate algorithms predictive of relapse has been limited, partly due to inadequate statistical methods. Additionally, despite the wealth of data showing strong associations between inflammation and schizophrenia, the two existing studies failed to demonstrate whether inflammatory parameters could predict relapse.

The drug development process in psychiatry faces significant challenges due to low reproducibility rates in animal testing, which often leads to translation failures. To address this issue, we introduce a new approach in psychiatric drug development: a preclinical randomized controlled trial (preRCT). To demonstrate its potential utility, we conducted a multi-center preRCT using the alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) model to assess the impact of ketamine and R-ketamine on alcohol relapse across three European research centers.
