In patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis (HD), the presence of silent cerebral infarction (SCI) is associated with high mortality. Plasma total homocysteine (tHcy), which increases with renal dysfunction, has been flagged as a novel predictor for cerebrovascular events. We tested the hypothesis that the presence of SCI correlates with tHcy in HD patients.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a spontaneous occlusive disease of the Willis circle. This study evaluated the presence of the radiological hallmarks of adult MMD on a "brain check-up" (BC) using MRI and MR angiography, in Japan. Intraoperative corticomuscular motor evoked potentials for evaluation of motor function: a comparison with corticospinal D and I waves.

Object: The goal of this study was to compare motor evoked potentials recorded from muscles (muscle MEPs or corticomuscular MEPs) with corticospinal MEPs recorded from the cervical epidural space (spinal MEPs or corticospinal MEPs) to assess their efficacy in the intraoperative monitoring of motor function.

Methods: Muscle and spinal MEPs were simultaneously recorded during surgery in 80 patients harboring brain tumors. Each case was assigned to one of four groups according to final changes in the MEPs: (1) Group A, in which there was an increased amplitude in the muscle MEP with an increased 13 wave amplitude (12 cases); (2) Group B, in which there was no significant change in the MEP (43 cases); (3) Group C, in which there was a decreased muscle MEP amplitude (< 35% of the control) with a decreased I wave amplitude but an unchanged D wave (15 cases); or (4) Group D, in which there was an absent muscle MEP with a decreased D wave amplitude (10 cases).

The promyelocytic leukemia gene product (PML) becomes conjugated in vivo to the small ubiquitin-like protein SUMO-1, altering its behavior and capacity to recruit other proteins to PML nuclear bodies (PML-NBs). In the NB4 cell line, which was derived from an APL patient and expresses PML:RARalpha, we observed a retinoic acid-dependent change in the modification of specific proteins by SUMO-1.

Erythropoietin-producing cells in the liver of ICR-derived glomerulonephritis (ICGN) mice.

Proteasome inhibition induces hepatic stellate cell apoptosis.

Induction of hepatic stellate cell (HSC) apoptosis attenuates hepatic fibrosis, and, therefore, mechanisms to induce HSC cell death are of therapeutic interest. Proteasome inhibitors induce apoptosis in transformed cells, especially those cells dependent upon nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) activation. Because stimulated HSCs also trigger NF-kappaB activation, the aim of this study was to determine if proteasome inhibitors induce HSC apoptosis.

Usefulness and cost effectiveness of cardiovascular screening of young adolescents.

Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the usefulness of a screening system for cardiovascular disease in Kagoshima, Japan, and to compare its cost-effectiveness with that of a similar system reported in the United States.

In Japan, both athletes and nonathletes have been screened for the presence or absence of cardiovascular diseases for more than 20 yr.

Skin cancer screening on a fishing island and in an inland agricultural area of Japan.

We performed skin cancer screening from 2000 to 2004 at two locations in Japan's Oita Prefecture: Himeshima, a small fishing island, and Naoiri, an inland agricultural area. We found 108 and 21 cases of AK in Himeshima and Naoiri, respectively. None of the AKs transformed into SCC, and 21.

[A study of various causes of influence on inter-child emotions--from a survey conducted on postpartum mothers].

This research was conducted as a self-reporting anonymous survey of 185 postpartum mothers in hospitals in order to clarify the causes of influence on the inter-child emotions of mothers, who are usually the main fosterers of the child. SPSS 12.0 J for Windows was used for statistical analysis, and the relationship between points of inter-child emotion and each questioned item was analyzed with Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test.

Rapid-onset primary biliary cirrhosis resembling drug-induced liver injury.

A 54-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of acute liver injury. Since she had a history of having used a diet product, drug-induced liver injury (DILI) was initially considered. However, the patient was subsequently diagnosed as suffering from primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) based on the findings of liver histology and serum anti-mitochondrial antibody positivity.

Dysfunction of erythropoietin-producing interstitial cells in the kidneys of ICR-derived glomerulonephritis (ICGN) mice.

Anemia is a major secondary symptom in chronic renal disorder (CRD), but the precise cause of insufficient production of erythropoietin (EPO) remains unclear owing to the controversial localization of EPO-producing cells in the kidneys. The ICR-derived glomerulonephritis (ICGN) mouse, a new hereditary nephrotic mouse, is an appropriate model of anemia associated with CRD. By using an amplified in situ hybridization technique, we detected and counted the renal EPO-producing cells under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions.

Cardiomyopathy in Swedish patients with the Gly53Glu and His88Arg transthyretin variants.

We report two new amyloidogenic transthyretin (TTR) variants detected in the Swedish population. One variant was previously unknown, while the other has been described in a French family. In Swedish patients, both variants have caused late-onset cardiac amyloidosis characterised by heart failure.

Reproductive health status, knowledge, and access to health care among female migrants in Shanghai, China.

As the largest labour flow in human history, the recent rise in migration in China has opened up unprecedented opportunities for millions of Chinese to rearrange their lives. At the same time, this process has also posed great challenges to Chinese migrants, especially female migrants, who not only face a bias against 'outsiders' but also have a greater need for reproductive health-related services in their migratory destinations. Based on data collected via multiple sources in Shanghai, China's largest metropolis, this study profiles the changing characteristics of female migrants, presents data on self-reported symptoms of reproductive health-related problems and knowledge on reproductive health issues, compares maternal and child health measures between migrants and local residents, and examines factors related to reproductive health knowledge and migrants' access to health care in urban China.

[A case of recurrent breast cancer successfully treated with capecitabine monotherapy].

Lysyl oxidase (LOX), an extracellular enzyme, plays a key role in the post-translational modification of collagens and elastin, catalyzing inter- and intra-crosslinking reactions. Because the crosslinked extracellular matrices (ECMs) are highly resistant to degradative enzymes, it is considered that the over-expression of LOX may cause severe fibrotic degeneration. In the present study, we addressed the role of LOX-mediated crosslinking in chronic renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis using an animal model of hereditary nephrotic syndrome, the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR)-derived glomerulonephritis (ICGN) mouse.

Background: Kidney failure is a common complication in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP). It has been suggested that advanced glycation end products (AGEs) play an important role in the development and pathogenesis of FAP.

Material And Methods: To evaluate the impact of AGEs on FAP patients' kidney dysfunction, we measured AGE in serum and urine of 28 FAP patients and 18 healthy controls by AGE-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Trace element accumulation in fishes collected from coastal waters of the Caspian Sea.

Concentrations of 13 trace elements (V, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Hg, Tl and Pb) were determined in muscle of bony fishes collected from coastal areas of the Caspian Sea (Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran). In all the fishes, Zn concentration was highest, followed by Cu, Se, Mn and Co, while levels of toxic elements (Ag, Cd, Cd, Tl and Pb) were relatively low. Concentrations of several elements were significantly varied between the species in each sampling area.

Distribution of trace elements in subcellular fractions of three aquatic birds.

This study investigated the subcellular distribution of Cu, Zn, Cd and Ag in liver of mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), spot-billed duck (A. poecilorhyncha) and great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) to better understand metal fractionation and dynamics in avian liver. Most of the total Cu, Zn, Cd and Ag were present in hepatocytosol, and their concentrations increased with total hepatic levels in all the three avian species.
